Ford Motor executives are in active discussions about scrapping the electric version of its F-150 pickup, according to people familiar with the matter, which would make the money-losing truck America’s first major EV casualty.

The Lightning, once described by Ford as a modern Model T for its importance to the company, fell far short of expectations as American truck buyers skipped the electric version of the top-selling truck. Ford has racked up $13 billion in EV losses since 2023.
“The demand is just not there” for F-150 Lightning and other big electric pickups, said Adam Kraushaar, owner of Lester Glenn Auto Group in New Jersey. He sells Ford, GMC, Chevy and other brands. “We don’t order a lot of them because we don’t sell them.”

No final decision has yet been made, according to people familiar with the discussions, but such a move by Ford could be the beginning of the end for big EV trucks. Ram truck-maker Stellantis earlier this year called off plans to make an electric version of its full-size pickup. General Motors executives have discussed discontinuing some electric trucks, according to people familiar with the matter. Sales of Tesla’s angular, stainless steel Cybertruck pickup tanked this year. And EV truck-maker Rivian has been cutting jobs to conserve cash.

No one wants a truck that can't tow more than 80 miles.

Who even wants an electric truck? Was there really a need for this?

In Ford’s defense, who could have guessed there isn’t any demand for a pickup truck with less than 250 miles range?

They should consider scrapping the current gas version, as well.

The Biden administration allowed the EV lobby way too much latitude during his presidency. They simply ignored the fact that you cannot make people buy things. It is never going to work. The technology is going to have to evolve to make them reasonable for most people to drive, and price them at a price that makes purchasing one make sense. Until you do those two things you are wasting your time

The f150 shouldn't be offered with anything other than the 5.0 coyote

No, but Ford likely had a need for the federal subsidies for retooling factories for electric vehicles, which probably led to some (at least temporary) stock jumps for investors and executives.

BEV trucks never made sense. BEV powertrains don't like continuous high load, which is what you get pushing a brick through the air at freeway speeds, especially if you're hauling or towing. Hybrids make a lot more sense for trucks. Ford hedged by having both. The hedge is paying off, even if one leg of it goes away.

In the meantime, Ford built expertise with a stretch program in a field that it absolutely must excel in over the long term. The same BEV technology base that made the Lightning also applies to the electrical half of hybrids, and they will also need BEV models in the Escape class of vehicles sooner rather than later.

GM, by contrast, took a very lazy approach with its 9600 lb $100k BEV trucks, and learned little that it can apply to more practical vehicles. Any engineer will tell you that things get far easier when your weight and cost constraints are relaxed. They will lose more in the long run.

All EV trucks are flawed. But the F-150 Lighting is easily worst in class. The Mach E is hot garbage as well, and I think Ford just isn’t interested in throwing cash at them to keep up with GM, Hyundai, and Tesla.

GM makes a lot of EVs….not just trucks. They are well ahead of Ford for electrics, I think Hyundai is ahead of Ford as well.

GM developed their own architecture for their latest BEVs, and they have become the second most popular EV manufacturer in the US behind Tesla. The real question now is if all of that investment was worth it. Some would argue that it was not.

Everyone I see on the road has its lightbar/daytime running light completely faded looking. Looks like shite.
