The Federal Aviation Administration will reduce flight capacity by 10% at 40 major airports across the country, officials announced during a press conference on Wednesday.

The decision could cut thousands of flights per day. The restrictions will go into effect Friday morning, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. The airports that will be impacted will be announced on Thursday, officials said.

“Our sole role is to make sure that we keep this airspace as safe as possible. Reduction in capacity at 40 of our locations. This is not based on light airline travel locations. This is about where the pressure is and how to really deviate the pressure,” said Bedford.

This comes after Duffy said earlier this week that the FAA will be forced to shut down the airspace in some areas if the shutdown continues into next week.

Buckle up everyone. Let's hope this doesn't continue to thanksgiving or it's going to get rough

We are supposed to be flying MSY-DFW-MSN Saturday a.m. on AA.

United is giving refunds.

And importantly, any customer traveling during this period is eligible for a refund if they do not wish to fly – even if their flight isn't impacted.

I am terrified of Thanksgiving travel. Supposed to be going MSY-MCO. Trying to convince my wife to just drive, but our 1 year old hates the car. No idea what we will do.

I'm going to the otherside of the world for Thanksgiving for a trip I have been planning for a year. I am starting to get concerned.

It's gonna be a nightmare but hopefully will be the catalyst to end the shutdown. If memory serves, the last shutdowns have been resolved as a result of ATC/TSA issues.

Just hoping they get it squared away by next week.

Well at least it’s a legit excuse for those not wanting to deal with holiday family BS to just stay home

I'm supposed to fly AUS-MSY for the Arkansas game next weekend and booked a super late flight on Thursday night. I'm hoping that one gets cancelled so I can rebook to the earlier option.

Agree. I only have 2 trips scheduled right now for the rest of the year, but that might change. I'm going to book back-up cancelable return flights, but if my departing flight gets cancelled and not rebooked same day the trip just won't happen. Will deal.

If this is still going on come Thanksgiving, there will be fights, riots, and arrests at the airports.

We should take all their congress folks salaries and pay TSA and air traffic control.

That wouldn't even cover an hour of their pay. There are 50,000 TSA Officers and 14,000 air traffic controllers.

On a positive note, IAH has fixed the TSA issue. When landing and leaving, there was barely a line in E terminal.

Night and day difference to Monday and the weekend.

Hopefully they will cancel the flights several days ahead and not a few hours before.

Their real pay would pay for it. Not what they say what congressman get paid, but the money they actually get paid.
