Google’s Deepmind AI hurricane tracker was twice as accurate as NWS models

It beat out every other model. And it even beat out human experts working with multiple models.

Although Google DeepMind’s Weather Lab only started releasing cyclone track forecasts in June, the company’s AI forecasting service performed exceptionally well. By contrast, the Global Forecast System model, which is operated by the US National Weather Service, is based on traditional physics, and runs on powerful supercomputers, performed abysmally.
quote:
This chart sums up the track forecast accuracy for all 13 named storms in the Atlantic Basin this season, measuring the mean position error at various hours in the forecast, from 0 to 120 hours (five days). On this chart, the lower a line is, the better a model has performed. The dotted black line shows the average forecast error for official forecasts from the 2022 to 2024 seasons. What jumps out is that the United States’ premier global model, the GFS (denoted here as AVNI), is by far the worst-performing model. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the chart, in maroon, is the Google DeepMind model (GDMI), performing the best at nearly all forecast hours. The difference in errors between the US GFS model and Google’s DeepMind is remarkable. At five days, the Google forecast had an error of 165 nautical miles compared to 360 nautical miles for the GFS model, more than twice as bad. This is the kind of error that causes forecasters to completely disregard one model in favor of another.

Watchout RDS. AI is coming for you.

This is the kind of stuff we should be using AI for. Not for Indians to make fake posts on Facebook saying that Brian Kelly donated his buyout to build a home for orphans

The GFS was truly awful this year. The Euro already had it beat and now Google AI has come to pour salt on the wound.

It is crazy to see these models when they run strictly on data and not bias.

Let's AI Cantore and keep Stephanie Abrams

The cone has always been the "Weather Gods" of tv's way of telling us they have no idea what's about to happen. Thankfully AI is finally here to open the public's eyes.
Most people don't know this but they actually move the cone. Does that make any sense to you. How can you have a cone if you can move the cone? The whole earth becomes your cone.

It likely just aggregated and averaged all the already available data into a single point source.

Seems like just yesterday the NWS people were crying and wailing about Trump cutting their funding.
They claimed lack of forecasting and resources would cost lives.
Now we shocked to find out that Google's AI outperforms this bloated organization.
Nice.

Well RIP meteorology as a career soon.

Most of those jobs are being refilled. When all is said and done they will have lost less than 100 positions.

This seems like overfitting.
Also this is amusing, and par for the course amongst the ML community… The goal for all models should be to capture the physics as accurately as possible. When they train ML algorithms on physical processes, they use classical physics models to create training data sets lol. All of them.
And from what i’ve seen from PINNs (physics informed neural networks) where the model tries to “learn” a physics operator like a laplacian… they fail miserably in verification relative to traditional numerical methods… errors are huge even for simple manufactured solutions.

Like someone saying, “I’m fairly confident that there is a good chance that such and such has a 22.3456-46.77899% of probably maybe happening.”

AI is coming for basically everything.
We're inventing something that makes us obsolete because its smarter, less emotional and doesnt sleep.
The fact that we're doing so is further proof of how foolish we are.

Yeah agreed. Didn't think this at the beginning of the year but now I do.
Some think their job is 'AI proof' are failing to consider the increased competition for their job/industry by people displaced by AI and willing to work for less.
