Kelly's detached style affected other areas. One current staff member joked it felt like "Where's Waldo?" LSU had full staff meetings 48 hours before games, but otherwise, a former staff member said he could count on two hands how many full staff meetings took place in his three-plus years with the team. At his previous school, the head coach held a staff meeting every morning.

quote:

"He would interact with you when he needed something," the current staff member said. "He was great to deal with when you interacted with him. Cordial. Friendly. Great sense of humor. But it wasn’t often. I think people would have liked to see him more."

Said another current staff member: "My first four weeks here, I didn’t see him."

quote:

Multiple staff members said recruits and their high school coaches questioned why they didn't hear from Kelly. It made them doubt that LSU really wanted them. One former staff member called that the "biggest complaint" the staff got and added there were times when Kelly didn't know he had already met someone.
"I think that hurt in recruiting a lot because he would say, ‘Hey, nice to meet you,'" the former staff member said. "And he had met the kid before. That was tough."

I'm convinced LSU will be getting an upgrade at HC as long as it is someone who busts their arse

It’s pretty impressive that he is back already, I feel terrible for him. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy

Just sounds like someone that was checked out. We need someone hungry.

a 17 year old kid from bayou town LA is not the same as a 5th year transfer QB looking for million to play QB

Maybe you shouldn’t just group all of the players together. Maybe some of them actually want to speak to the head coach of the football team. Or even just have the head coach know who they are…

Yeah

But also, you want some interaction and interest from the head coach. O would stalk kids all the way through the airport. BK wouldn't even talk to kids when the position coach had them on the phone already.

And this is why he was fired.
You don’t get to be an absentee coach in the SEC.

And Woody knew about this and didn’t force change. Which is why he was fired too.

For all those crying about this… were we supposed to accept that for the next 6 years??

as I mentioned, not taking up for Kelly, he's a bum and a thief, and I know there's a medium somewhere, but these kids are looking for the highest bidder and that's where their loyalty lies

Kelly had clearly checked out. Heard it from parents who had sons being recruited and hearing it echo’d through the media.

If there’s a fault of woody, it’s that he didnt or couldn’t correct that. I understand that it’s difficult and I understand that the relationship between Kelly and woody had broken down but I would hope that woody could get him in line. I think Kelly was an arrogant and belligerent person to deal with.

It ended how it needed to end. Kelly is one person that I’ll never make excuses for or feel sorry for. He is a jerk.

Again, why are you lumping all players together? Are you talking to players on the team on a regular basis?

Even if it’s true, the HC should likely know they names of guys he is recruiting or if he had met them before.

I mean, we have guys like Frank who specialize in recruiting and I'd rather them be the guys who form the relationships with the players and recruit them. Even Sloan was apparently a very good recruiter. I think the head coach needs to be more involved in identifying who he really wants his coaches to recruit to build his team.

BK was apparently too detached from everything though. I mean, not saying hi to a kid on the phone with another recruiter and saying "make an appointment" just shows that he didn't want things bad enough. If he had almost nothing to do with recruiting, rarely held meetings and didn't seem involved with the game planning, what exactly did he do? I think that's why he's gone. He wasn't involved enough. I'm surprised he won 70 % of his games being so hands-off.

Between this and the Feldman article it’s never been more clear that what’s happened needed to. The governor’s antics aside this was a mess of a football operations and it’s kind of easy we weren’t worse than we actually are.

They are millionaire teenagers. What a fricking nightmare. I can't imagine having to coach these kids.

After the 2023 season, LSU wanted to keep him defensive tackle Maason Smith. As Smith debated whether or not to enter the NFL draft, a donor involved in the operation of LSU’s name, image and likeness collective participated in a meeting. He suggested Kelly should call Smith, thinking that could reassure him without a new defensive line coach in place. Smith eventually turned pro.

"'That’s a great idea. If you have his phone number, please share it with me,'" the donor recalled Kelly saying. He then thought: "It seems odd that I have his phone number and you don’t."

Imagine having to play for a coach that doesn’t show up to the facility and doesn’t know who you are. What a fricking nightmare.
