Wait, MLB created a special rule to keep Ohtani in games if he has a bad pitching night?

... Or doesn't go 9innings...

And they only did it once he went to the Dodgers?

I'm sorry, you want to keep him in the game, you have to do like everyone else for 150 yrs and do a positional shift.

Grok:

quote:

If Ohtani is pulled early from pitching (e.g., after 1–2 innings due to pitch count, ineffectiveness, or injury), the Dodgers simply insert a reliever on the mound. Ohtani then remains in the game solely as the DH, continuing to bat in his original lineup spot (typically #2) without taking a defensive position. The relief pitcher does not bat, preserving the 10-batter order and keeping Ohtani's elite bat active for the full game.

This flexibility was specifically added to MLB rules in 2023 to accommodate two-way stars like Ohtani, avoiding the need to bench him or force awkward in-game positional shifts. In tonight's Game 7 vs. the Blue Jays, with Ohtani on short rest after his Game 4 start, manager Dave Roberts could leverage this exact strategy if things go south early on the mound.

It would be peak MLB to not change the rules to accommodate the biggest freak show the sport has ever seen

They did it several years before he left the Angels

That's been the way it works in college for as long as I can remember.

No, it’s not just for Ohtani. Any team can use the rule.

I think he just highlighted a hole in the existing rules cause it never came up so they clarified and codified it

The other rule was dumb anyway.

The DH and Pitcher are 2 different positions. Imagine if you had to change DH everytime you changed pitchers.

The rule may have worked against the Dodgers tonight though because it forced them to start him without enough rest. If they'd used him in relief, he would have had to take the field and would have ended the ability for LA to have a DH.

Seems like you should have e flexibility to use a player in the line up at any position.
