Jays threw more strikes to Ohtani that AB than the Angels did Bonds the entire ‘02 Series

And he still hit 4 home runs. Ohtani’s pitching may put him ahead of Bonds as an all around player, but his hitting/batting isn’t really close. I think a lot of folks have forgotten—or were too young to see—prime Bonds. He got 2 pitches to hit per game, not at-bat. And shame on your arse if you did. Cause he was gonna piss all over it. Hard.

This is not to diminish what Shohei is doing. It’s absurd when you factor his pitching. But when people say stuff like “we’ve never seen anything like this,” they’re wrong. We’ve seen better.

quote:

In seven games. He batted .471 with 4 home runs, 6 RBIs, and a remarkable .700 on-base percentage, which included 13 walks (7 intentional). He made history by hitting a home run in each of his first three World Series games.

You really had to see it to understand. This guy talks about that. Yes, he juiced, obviously. But nobody was ever as locked in in MLB history as Bonds was from 2000-2005. Watch how he takes pitches. How far he lets the ball travel. It’s ridiculous.

I am. You can factor it in however you want. I just appreciate it from the art of hitting standpoint. He still had to do it. And he did it better than anyone in history. And if you don’t think Ohtani juices, you’re insane. Dude was made in a lab. Maybe literally.

Well, if that’s your standard, you’re negating just about every baseball great of the past 35 years. Pssssst. All your heroes juiced.

But I’m not really trying to argue anything. I mean, the balls literally went over the fence. I watched them.

Bonds had 137 RBI in ‘01. 53% of them were him.

If you take out all 763 career home runs, he still would have a higher career OBP than Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez.

From 2001 to 2004, reached base in 94% of his games, 40% of his ABs ended in home runs or walks.

He has more MVPs (7) than any 2 other players in MLB history combined (and should have 2 more that Terry Pendleton and Jeff Kent robbed from him).

I could post these all night. I might. It’s hitting porn.

Eric Gagne and AJ talk about that AB. Apparently Bonds and Gagne agreed before the game that he would only throw him 1 off speed pitch if they faced each other.

Ohtani is interesting.

I think the baseball GOAT needs both a good strong peak and longevity

so clearly he hasn’t been around enough for the longevity party yet

idk if he’s a better hitter than Judge overall. maybe more clutch

So the question is, does being an elite pitcher put him over?

For me the biggest issue with that argument is how often he’s hurt and not pitching

he’s absolutely elite when he pitches which makes him a freakish unicorn

but more often than not he isn’t pitching

But Bonds isn't the last big thing people saw, so how can he be better than Ohtani?
