Louisiana is going to fund food stamps with the snap pause - should this be a state issue?

I say yes

The federal government should give a timeline for when the program expires and allow states to build up their own infrastructure for food aid. That way the people who are truly in need are not at the political whims of DC politics and the state can provide policies as they see fit.

Yes period. The federal government should not be the caretakers of welfare or the human resource department period. The federal government was created to keep the sovereignty of our nation. That is it and nothing else.

Would also encourage more responsible use of funds rather than having daddy federal gubment printing $3000 a month so Joanice can feed her 17 kids rice and beans while she trades the rest for drugs and cash

Louisiana is poor as a state. Now you want the state to fund SNAP when 18% of all people in Louisiana are on SNAP?

10 States With the Highest Percentage of Families on SNAP

quote:

2. Louisiana

Total number of people with SNAP: 847,100
Percentage of state residents on SNAP: 18%
Percentage of people with income at or below 50% poverty line: 41%
Average monthly SNAP benefits per household: $336

How do you plan to fund that? We already have some of the highest sales tax, property taxes are low but that's local. How do you want to fund it?

If the federal program were being phased out, sure. Having it controlled by the states would give each state the flexibility to set their own funding methods and qualifications. As all states have balanced budget mandates, this then gives impetus to states to try streamlining the programs to entice people off of them when they have alternatives.

That's not what's happening though, so no I don't agree with the state funding it right now.

Damn, this seems like a good idea on its face. Something I hadn’t considered.

What % of those folks qualify for it?

Kick off the ones who don’t. Idk how much that would help, but surely it would help.

It's not my fault it's a poor state. If they're poor then maybe they don't pay out as much as the feds did. If the poors don't like it they can move to another state that pays better benefits.

In general it should be.. the feds can supplement programs as they see fit but like so many issues, first and foremost these problems should be addressed on a local level on out …

How about we not fund out outside of those who absolutely need it AKA the elderly who already paid into the system and the rest can all move

I strongly agree with this. It should concern all of us that people who legitimately need assistance- whether that be 10% of recipients or not, will not have it because Dems in Washington have lost the American script.

Federal food stamps make no sense......it is a recipe for fraud, which it is!

It should be a personal issue. I for one am interested to see how this turns out, Nov 1st is a day that has been needing to come for far too long. I support helping seniors, disabled and feeding children at school... the rest can learn hard not to suck.

The problem is the culcha. We have allowed it to manifest because we do not like to be called a name.

Or you make damn sure the benefits are doled out correctly. There are people in place to verify actual needs but they are not doing it.

I say give them food instead of money on a card. Send beans, rice, butter, cheese, bread and spam. That will sustain them until they finds jobs.

Also an option but each state should decide what works best for them
