Dems hoping to lower filibuster or claim policy concessions

Since it seems a lot of the right don't understand the fight going on over the two CRs/Shutdown, it may be a good time to try and share some reasons the GOP needs to hold firm and give them nothing.
A good overview of what the Dems are doing is found on RCP: Left's shutdown power play
"One explanation is that Democrats are playing what in chess is called a fork: If the Republicans cave in on Democrat demands, they achieve a policy win, but if neither side caves, then eventually Senate Republicans will eliminate the filibuster rule in order to fund the government – which would be an even bigger win for the Democrats."
Anyone who says we need to change the filibuster rule is either a leftwing activist or someone who doesn't get what's at stake in the long term if this happens. The biggest victory we could give them would be to lower the number to 50 and then pass a clean CR. They'd then be free to do whatever they want the next time they had power.

Sounds like we need to make sure that there are none of them left to regain power then, huh?
ETA - I think the filibuster is a great firewall to protect simple majority mob rule in the Senate. That said, the best defense is a good offense, and my original statement is one not of wiping the Democrats out, but rather rooted in wanting to throw so much sunlight on their diseased souls that the D Party as a whole becomes completely radioactive for the next 10 generations.

too dangerous. have you assessed the IQ of the average voter? don't change the filibuster rules.

Even lowering it to 55 sets a precedent I don’t want to touch. End this madness now.

I don't advocate making any changes, other than those gay-arse blue slip courtesies.

The problem is that a lot of folks want a win on the shutdown and think by doing the unthinkable and lowering the filibuster rule to 50 or even 55 we could "win." You already see those on the right saying we should do this, not just on here, PT, but in congress.

The GOP is in the driver's seat on this. They are the majority and are voting "yes" on what is essentially a bill about "keeping the government open." The Dems are the minority but have enough stroke to vote "no," which comes across more and more strongly as a "no" to "keeping the government open." Polling on which party is to blame is shifting from GOP to DEM.
Newsweek from Tuesday
quote:
And the gap is beginning to narrow between blame for Democrats and blame for Republicans. Just six points now separate the parties in public blame for the shutdown, according to the latest YouGov/Economist poll. It found that 39 percent of Americans hold Trump and congressional Republicans responsible, while 33 percent blame Democrats in Congress.
The week before, the gap was wider—41 percent blamed Trump and the GOP, compared with 30 percent who blamed Democrats. The share of respondents who say both sides are equally at fault has also slipped, from 23 percent last week to 20 percent now.
The GOP can keep calling it the "Schumer Shutdown" and should still harp on how the Dems are keeping the government closed mainly to provide healthcare for illegals, but where they should all be focused is at least on the more general idea that "we're here and keep voting to open the government, but the Democrats keep voting 'no' so they can keep it closed."

How about we just leave the government closed until they say uncle and allow the extra 7 votes.

The Democrats will win because they’re smarter than the Republicans. They always win and Republicans always lose.

That won’t happen, the Democrats have the winning hand and will not concede. If they wait long enough, the GOP will repeal the entire BBB and impeach Trump.

I’ve seen a huge sample of thoughts and behavior from Democrats that would completely destroy this notion.

Ok but what would stop them from just changing the filibuster rule when they get back in power?

How can the public blame republicans.
Its the same bill democrats approved several times, the same one, the only difference is Trump is in office.
Now they want to change the whole thing, add 1.5 trillion dollars, hold the american public for ransom and blame the gop.
This is simply not logical.

Hold your ground GOP.
Millions are about to lose their food stamps- the Left will fold.

So, using the logic of the video...the GOP passes a short term extension of the ACA tax credits, capped by income. Then the Dems are left to explain why they still want to keep things shut.
I don't know how hard that would be. It may pass the House, but once in the senate, we could suspend rules for that bill alone and then pass with simple majority. This would keep the super majority intact for appropriation bills. IDK, I'm not a parliamentarian but passing a bill to address the healthcare issue would blow up the Dems position for voting against funding the government.

IDK, the only thing would be they would be doing it and so the next time the GOP got power it would run as hard as possible unconstrained. So far both sides have not done this due to the fear of what happens afterwards when they are out of power.

Do not do anything at all. They will cave eventually. They absolutely will not let their voting base starve or be evicted.
