On Monday, London Johnson -- a former four-star recruit who has averaged 7.6 points over three seasons in the G League -- announced his commitment to Louisville.
Last month, another G League player, Thierry Darlan, announced his commitment to Santa Clara.

If tweet fails to load, click here. Only thing is that eligibility is still within 5 years of their high school graduation (probably won’t stick if someone brings the NCAA to court, rinse repeat)
Crazy to see, but not that surprising though. Why make 40k a year in the G League when George Mason is offering 6 figures?
NCAA made their own bed, now they have to lay in their shite.

This is consistent with what has been allowed for baseball players in division 2. Any pro years take up years of eligibility. It’s mostly Caribbean players that take advantage of that quirk in the rules.

Diego pavia has already twice demonstrated that isn’t actually a rule anymore either.

The ncaa has rendered itself a completely pointless organization the last few years. The courts making stupid decisions hadn’t helped either.

You mean the decades of acting illegally which led to them refusing to create a workable system and instead have to do ad hoc piecemeal rulemaking?
The NCAA could have been ahead of things in the early 00s and this would all be running smoothly but they kept their head in the sand and refused to admit their illegal practices.
Lots of things like the example in OP likely could have been legally regulated out of the game, but since the NCAA refused to adapt proactively, they're in constant reactive mode fearing taking another L in the courts. They're overreacting and overcorrecting for their prior failures.

conferences will need to step in and say these are our eligibility rules and teams will have to agree and move on
it's only a matter of time before college athletes become employees, only way around all this BS

I don’t understand why the NCAA isn’t allowed to have standards to participate in a 100% voluntary league.
I can see the whole keeping them from making money independently argument. I don’t agree with it. But I can see it.
Why on earth should the NCAA not be allowed to say we only want players basically right out of high school?

Here’s the thing as far as I’m concerned… if you couldn’t regulate them now, you would have lost in court in 1990 too

That was created at the behest of the government so kids would stop dying and there’d be common standards!

quote:I’m with you on this. The years of inaction might have bought the NCAA time to operate under the status quo, which was great for college sports. Why make significant changes that will be challenged in court, basically speeding up their death? They knew they were legally powerless.

Maybe schools should just focus on education?

NCAA won’t be around much longer. The process has already started

When has this ever been the rule?
It’s 5 years from the start you enroll into college

I'm always curiosu when I see comments like this. What, exactly, would you prefer to see from the NCAA?
It's funny. With each passing day we see more and more people lamenting the state of college athletics. The good ol days are gone, this new pro-era sucks, NCAA football is dead, etc. Well...the NCAA for decades upon decades maintained a system that regulated eligibility standards, transfer rules, punishing cheaters, etc. It worked, people enjoyed the product. It really wasn't until about 7 or 8 very short years ago that people started saying "eh frick that, I wanna do what I wanna do regardless of the rules so I'm going to sue to get my way", then pantywaist judges ruled in favor and overruled any of the restriction the NCAA had in place. Now we jsut have utter chaos free for all where anything goes.
Having the benefit of hindsight, it appears that the NCAA was the glue holding the nostalgic NCAAF product together that all of us grew up on and still hold the memory of so dear. Now that they are rendered meaningless but the court system we're left with a heaping pile of shite.
So again, I don't understand why people shite talking the NCAA and pretneding like this is their fault or their issue.

Don't think so. Plenty of players have played college sports much more than 5 years after graduating high school.

We need to seriously stop giving a trap about what goes on in College sports...and just like "student-athlete" drop the "College" when it comes to this sports business and paid employees.... So should the NCAA, it would make us all happier to stop trying to pretend and sandbag the Flood.

This is a idiotic circus. College athletics is apparently the only institution in the country that is not allowed to have any rules at all on anything. All of it must be destroyed. Hell with these people and college sports.

Based on this thread, then Chad Powers should be good even if he gets caught?
