Was BK the best choice in 2021 for Woodward?

Our program was in complete destruction from O. Woody wasn’t going to hire Kiffin or Lanning at the time.

Options at the time:
BK
Lincoln Riley (board favorite),
Napier
Luke Fickell (my choice at time)
Aranda
Jimbo
Mel Tucker
Matt Rhule

To me BK and Lincoln are about equal so far. The rest suck.

Woody made the right hire in 2021 with BK imo for what he was looking for.

He went wrong with a 10 year contract especially in a new transfer portal/NIL era where you have to have a coach willing to adapt and change their ways.

There is nearly zero difference in the level of suck for any of the coaches listed.

ETA: At least with Aranda we wouldn't be soft.

ETAA: I don't think I saw Rhule on there originally. We also wouldn't be soft under him.

I will disqualify myself. I remember REALLY wanting Tom Herman to replace Miles.

Aranda’s defenses at Baylor are SOFT.

Not one coach on that list we would be happy with.

I also think woodward needs to never offer a contract more than 4/5 years again

I don’t think any of us ever imagined BK in the mix
Riley was flat out scared of the SEC grind
Fickell turned us down I believe
Aranda was a TD fav
Jimbo too toxic
We jumped the shark with Mel tucker
And I don’t remember matt rhule situation

It was the safe hire. After the way Orgeron left the program.

A guy who was going to stabilize the program, win a bunch of games, likely never a big one, but a bunch of games and may luck into making a run.

He’s never won big games in his career, I don’t know why everyone expected him to when he got here.

Yes, this board was going crazy for Riley and he has done much worse. The other choice was Billy Napier.

Those weren’t the only options. Here’s a couple others:
Dan Lanning
Kalen DeBoer
Joey McGuire

10 year, guaranteed contract.

My takeaway is that fans are mostly pissed at this. It's not about taking a shot at pulling Kelly from Notre Dame.

Kelly has now disenfranchised a good portion of the fanbase with his results and attitude. Most of the defenders now are relying on the contract as an argument to keep Kelly. It's really backwards thinking. Kelly isn't what we hoped he would be, but we paid him too much and guaranteed that payment, therefore getting rid of him can't happen and people should shut up.

We're in a similar boat in MBB with CoachMc. Outside of any Wade discussion, we hired a coach that doesn't seem a fit for what is needed for LSU MBB (a salesman, high-energy sell the program) from a historically good mid-major (they won for 30 years prior to him). And the results and temperature of the program are hitting more lows. Instead of addressing the problem, AD takes a mid-season SEC win, with the next game against the only program worse than LSU to announce NIL was the problem. And people defend that.

Wool meet eyes.

Lanning was DC at UGA. Woody was never going first time HC.

KD was never mentioned

That is a fair assessment. I completely agree on the contract and I hated it at the time because it boxes you in long term. Now we are there

Baylor is also the hardest job in Texas, he is doing alright but sustained success is a hard thing to achieve there

Their taste of success came when Texas and tech were way down. A&m was ok

they should have never been a big 12 school

Kiffin was the choice then and he’s the choice now. Woody just didn’t have the guts to pull the trigger

No one knew the options. No one. We all just speculated.

Kelly looked great on paper. And we all thought the same. He produced at ND, so it looked like he'd come down and get a title within a couple years. Turns out, that was not the plan. Year one looked promising with a huge Bama win and getting to the SEC game, but it was lightening in a bottle.

It that time I had neighbor who’s kinda connected (his words not mine) swore Mike Elko was going to be the next coach at LSU… no idea where he got that from… I remember making a post on TD about it and got downvoted to hell… i didn’t even know who Elko was at the time…

Out of those choices which one could have corrected the program from the depths of hell Orgeron left it legally and man power.
BK was the right choice, the 10 year contract was not

Don't mind BK on a 5-year deal, do mind on a 10 year deal.
