Everyone is obsessed with a splash coaching hire This is what gets schools into the situation LSU is in now. 2 of the most successful coaches in terms of consistent winning in the NCAA right now are Ryan Day and Kirby. Both are in their 1st HC gigs. Curt Cignetti is doing a fantastic job at Indiana, and his previous role was James Madison. DeBoer was at Fresno St before taking Washington to the playoffs, and Dan Lanning who everyone here drools over is in his 1st HC job.

Who's job is it to evaluate coaches. Everyone says that we don't want to be a training ground, but most of the coaches they covet are 1st timers.

Identifying and hiring the up and comer is the way to avoid the 10yr 100mil prove it contract. Then if he earns it, the way those guys do, by all means pay him.

Point. I guess I expressed my thought wrong. Were I was going is, why aren't the held accountable for it. This isn't just an LSU problem. Its easier for these guys to throw cash at a recognizable name, and probably safer, than to actually do the work, but looking around college football, its doesn't appear to be in the best interest of the schools or the sport

Both sides come with a risk. But you have to remember, part of the job is also convincing boosters to give you the money to pay whatever guy you want to hire. It’s probably much easier to convince a booster to pay for a well known guy over a guy that they have never heard of before.

I totally understand your overall point, and don’t necessarily disagree with it. I just think there’s a lot more factors that go into the decision.

If hiring Football Coaches was an exact science then the success rate would be much higher than what it is.

Ironically, that contract gives incentive to not work as hard. You’re incentivizing exactly what you’d like to avoid.

You always want to give someone room for growth and incentivize getting there.

IMO in the current landscape going for the splash experienced headline hire isn’t the way to go. Money much better spent on players and not coaching buyouts

The AD farms the search out to a national firm, who then vets and sends to the AD. Too many schools play Div 1 sports for an AD to know off the top of his head. Much more nuanced than calling up a buddy to recommend someone.

Basically, Kelly retired when he signed the LSU contract.
