Would A New Coach Accept A Hybrid Contract?

Because we've already (tentatively) fired Brian Kelly, would this work?
The following salary numbers are for exemplary purposes:
1. The contract length is 5 years; no more 10 year bull chit
2. For years 1 and 2, $10 million is guaranteed
3. Starting in year 3, base or guaranteed pay drops to $6 million
4. Small incentives (as in $1 - $2 million) in years 1 & 2, but beginning in year 3, incentives are raised such that $12 - $13 million is possible with a national championship.
5. For every top ten finish and/or playoff appearance, the contract rolls over and a new 5 year period begins.
6. For every rollover, the base or guaranteed salary stays at $6 million.
7. Every (?)3 years, the salary landscape is surveyed, with base and/or incentive payments adjusted to ensure our pay package stays in the upper echelon.
Such a contract would put the impetus clearly on the coach's shoulders, and in the event of BK 2.0, would not bankrupt an athletics department or its donors.
Incentives could include, but not be limited to:
1. Graduate X% of players
2. Making the conference championship game
3. Winning the conference championship
4. Playoff appearance
5. Top Ten finish in final poll
6. Winning playoff games
7. Winning national championship
8. Any other reasonable item I may have overlooked.

The current coach who has two road losses to top 20 SEC teams in which in both games we had the ball last and a shot to win is supposedly fired. What agent in their right mind would advise a coach to even consider this abomination of a deal. If you can get fired for being #19 ranked, only guaranteed money will work at least 5-7 years out and that’s going to be $12m per year.

Why would a coach agree to all of that when they could just go get all of that money guaranteed?
Posted on 10/19/25 at 4:59 pm to ronniep1
And who do you think would agree to this exactly?
Why not just take the Penn St, Florida or Arkansas job for 10 years 100 mill?

What we need is an AD with balls that says F your buyout contract. I'm paying you millions to come here to coach ball for 4-5 years at a place where 3 coaches have won NCs in the last 25 years. If it doesn't work out, too bad. Apologies for making you a multi-millionaire.

I must have turned the Vandy game off too soon. I missed the part where we had the ball last with a chance to win.

There is zero reason a coach would ever accept that while other coaches are getting the contracts we are seeing

Exactly. This place - stupid and toxic as usual.

You serious Clark?
It's a Coaches market out there right now. Florida, Penn State, FSU, UCLA, VaTech, Arkansas all have openings. We're only at Mid-Season. Coaches are about to get big time raises.

Player retention? Fewer players in the portal- maybe too high of a bar, but it would be nice.
I would even go so far as to give a $4-5MM bonus and raise the following year if they win a championship.
Bottom line is that 10 year guaranteed contracts are ridiculous for everyone but the coaches

Two teams that are less talented and will have three losses each of their own by the end of the season.
Why do you hate winning? Brian Kelly is not a winner and has never won anything in his entire division 1 career. That isn’t going to change. I’m sorry that you’re happy with a 9-3 ceiling.

The sound of expelling excess body gas is what I’m making.
Only a coach leaving a losing program where he is about to fired anyway would accept something like this.

Finally, Somebody that has some sense. Does not mean we like the situation but it is what it is.

Congrats: The only person interested in the job is now the Head Coach of Catholic.

He could do better than Kelly is doing with this talent right now. These gigantic buyouts are absolutely retarded when guys are getting paid 10 million per year as it is. And the universities F themselves over by having to pay 10s of millions just to fire coaches who underachieve. You have to pay them more just because they didn't do their job well. Makes sense.
I'd rather some up-and-coming guys who don't want to F everyone over thinking they are like Nick Saban when they don't have the championships. Hell, Saban was basically a nobody to college football fans when we hired him. $50-100 million buyouts are a joke. Nick Saban was the only coach worth a buyout like that.

Anyone that we would want to hire is already a multimillionaire. The only person willing to agree to these dumbass contract yall want are high school coaches or maybe a position coach somewhere.
If LSU is willing fire someone and pay them $50M+ to frick if, then the new coach is would absolutely demand a similar buyout. In fact, only a dumbass of a coach would take the job that yall want to offer.

LSU hired the coach of Notre Dame during a playoff season and fans are surprised it cost a lot of money.

Bc the big $$ boosters that fund these contracts and now the NIL collectives will no longer pay these enormous buyouts and $20m collectives.
You’ll see higher per year but little guaranteed buyouts bc funding into collectives.
These coaches are getting massive buyouts and begging boosters for massive collectives so they can win. And when they flop, the coach gets paid. They won’t continue to structure these deals the same.

They are literally doing it right now. Franklin just got $50 million. Napier just got $20 million.

Indiana just signed Cignetti to an 8-year, $93 million dollar contract that’s fully guaranteed.
