Ancient Romans used a communal sponge on a stick called a tersorium for cleaning themselves after using the toilet. This tool, which was made of a sea sponge attached to a wooden stick, was shared by multiple people in public latrines. After use, the sponge would be rinsed in running water or a bucket containing saltwater or vinegar to try and disinfect it before the next person used it.

Coincidentally, the nastiest thing I've ever seen and smelled in my life was an abandoned toilet in rural China. Burnt the damn hairs in my nose.
