I'm taking a trip next month and wanted to drive the coast between LA and San Diego while I was out there. Which areas would you say are a must see along pacific highway 1 traveling south? La Jolla? Anything else? Would even be open to driving north coast towards Malibu and further north, whichever is more scenic just looking for insight for those familiar with the area

Laguna Beach. Maybe Del Mar, especially if the horses are running.

Laguna Beach.

This is the nicest town with Newport Beach also up there. In Newport Beach check out Balboa Island and the pier. In Laguna Beach, drive to "Top of the World" which is a big hill that overlooks the entire area including the ocean in a 360 panorama. Thousand Steps Beach in Laguna Nigel is a really picturesque beach that will be full of lovely scenery. Mission San Juan Capistrano is worth a stop although I haven't seen it since it was damaged in an earthquake. I worked in the Gift Shop and at the front gate many, many moons ago. El Adobe mexican restaurant is across the street from the mission and was Richard Nixon's favorite restaurant. Its really good southwest mexican food.

To add with Newport, the Ocean Front walk is spectacular. Think it stretches just under four miles but I've done it several times when I'm there for work. As you / others have said, would say Laguna and Newport are worthwhile stops.

I've also been to Carlsbad a few times - Lively downtown with quite a few bars and restaurants. Good stop, as well, on your way to/from San Diego.

La Jolla is, technically, part of San Diego but feels very much removed and deserves its own mention. Bit too quiet for me but such an easy place to walk around.

Long Beach sort of sucks. Only thing I like about it is Shoreline Way, which is a long beachfront trail. Couple OK cocktail bars, I guess. Otherwise, I dread when work sends me there, which will be in a few weeks

The train along the coast was a great way to make that trip too.

Laguna was our favorite...stayed at the Ritz. Drinks or coffee there at least for a sunset view if you can.
