For me, if it still passes the visual and smell test, and there's no other option, I'm definitely taking the chance. For things like salad dressings, etc., I'm not even consider throwing it out unless it's like 3-6 months pass the expiration date. FWIW, I've found items in my pantry (can of baked beans) that was 3 years pass expiration. I opened it up to take a look and it looked the same as a new can would. I threw that one away though.
What is your stance?

Expiration dates are a scam by Big Grocery to get you to buy more food. If it smells ok I'll eat it.

My vinegar was past the due date, and I knew because it was very acidic and tart to the taste.

Nutritional values will be less. Providing whatever processed junk you were going to eat had any nutrition to begin with.

I'll toss most things in my pantry at like 6 months expired.

I tend to believe expiration dates are more of a CYA for the food industry than an actual useful date.

A lot of them say "best if used by ...".

That doesn't mean it can't be used after that date.

A lot of stuff has all kinds of preservatives in it. If it has been kept refrigerated, then should be good to go, even months beyond the "best if used by" date. Especially if the seal has not been broken.

If it passes the smell and taste test, should be fine.

Expiration dates just give me an idea of when I should start paying closer attention. Most items are good well past the date. Sometimes a cheese or bread will surprise me and premature mold on me, but everything else is usually alright for a bit.

People are aware that some dates are in regards to the packaging and not the product itself and/or are for the quality of the product and not the safety of eating it, right? If it says Best by, Sell by, or Use by, generally those are quality standard recomendations, not safety ones. Whatever it is generally is good for a short period after those dates.

They stay good for weeks sitting in a pantry in the thin plastic wrapper with a twist tie. Why?

Couple of months ago, I ate strawberry jelly that said on the jar: "Best by Aug. 2018."

I'm still alive. I put the jar of jelly back in the fridge, and I'll eat it again next time I make biscuits.

I'll drink it after the expiration date if it still passes look and smell. However, I'm still testing even before the date with milk. You can get a bad jug of milk that'll turn bad way before the date at times.

I didn’t realize Tony’s expired. Still use it. Think it expired like 2 years ago. Don’t notice a difference.

I don't mind canned goods that are past their expiration by a year or more. Salad dressings/condiments, I generally toss within a few months of the date. Sometimes, I'll find a random jar of jalapenos or something that's 3-4 years past the date.

My mom opened a jar of cherries that I think had a 2018 expiration date on them. They tasted...like sweet arse jarred cherries

But I'm also the guy that shops the 50% off meat section for pretty much everything, so take that for what it's worth. It either gets cooked or vacuum sealed & frozen the day I purchase it

Canned food never expires, if it's good it'll be good forever. That's the point of canning. If it's bad it'll be rancid well before the date and you'll notice it as soon as you open it.

Baking goods I'm strict about bc you won't get the same reaction from the baking powder or yeast and such. It'll be edible, but probably not great and I don't want dry tough pancakes or dense cake.

Milk I don't touch anywhere close to the date. Bad milk will change your life after consuming.

Meat I smell. If it doesn't stink I'm cooking it.

Condiments, spices, whatever. I'm not even checking dates on those.
