Fewest points allowed by any LSU team since 07, by the way. (In the first 6 games)

The 07 team gave up 56.

This team has only given up 71.

We good.

And then came the 7th game where UK made our defense look like a MAC team.

#20
#80
#92
#103 (tied)
#103 (tied)

These are the points per game rankings of the 5 FBS teams we’ve played. For perspective, LSU is #82

Penalties were the only thing that saved us from the one good team (Ole Miss) slaughtering us. Nearly 500 yards of offense through butter

It’s a solid defense but color me skeptical that it will end the year as one of the best defenses over that time

The Defense is much improved, but has only played 1 Top 50 offense (Ole Miss). The offense will have to protect the ball and score points for LSU to win games vs. the better offensive teams coming up. The defense can only do so much.

You have a pretty skewed way of looking at it, objectively you can not say our defense is not strong as hell.

We held Ole Miss 13 points below their average, Clemson 16 points below, Floriday 12 below, South Carolina 12 below.

Lets just say that LSU allowed their average, their rankings would all move up by 10 or 12 spots.

No matter the metric, yards, points, turnovers, sacks, thrid down conversions, rushing defense, pick a category and we are in teh top 25. Red Zone defense is kinda our weak link and we are in top 40.

No matter how you slice it, this defense is good.

And most teams have played 6 games. A 2.5 to 2.25 point addition would still move them up in rankings quite a bit.

we had # 3 ranked D under pellini in 05, 06 and 07. 2010 was good also under chief.

2011
PPG 10.5
YPG 262

2003
PPG 11
YPG 252

let's see where we are at the END of the season after bowl game.

that’s good, but we haven’t really played anybody, except Ole Miss. Clemson, UF, and SC aren’t what we thought they were.

Turns out our schedule is backloaded.

The skewed perspective is in how you’re interpreting this statistic. Those 6 game averages include 2-4 games of OOC fluff. The trend you’re pointing out exists for nearly all of the P4

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad D. But it won’t end up anywhere near 2007 (which, if you don’t recall, actually got torn up in the 2nd half)

Are going to ignore the penalties we had?

Especially on the drive where we got a stop but a bonehead late hit and a ticky tack PI gave them extra downs and about 45 extra yards leading to a TD

Or the Pick 6 we had called back by a soft PI call?

You can’t say the only reason they didn’t blow us out was because they committed penalties while ignoring our penalties that gave them an extra TD in a 1 score game.

objectively by almost every metric measured and by the eye test, this defense is really good. Really good in spite of having an offense that turns it over a bunch, often doesn’t flip the field and is pretty high up in three and out possessions.

I don’t know possessions defended, but I bet it is up there

That means defense bent but didn't break. Garrett's injury was what saved Ole miss from us not only winning, but keeping possessions from OM and rolling. OM played exceptionally and just scraped by us trotting out a cripple at QB.

Hold up. There’s no way you actually believe that interference call was “soft”?

Pickett ragdolled the WR…sad thing is, he likely still makes the play if he doesn’t commit the boneheaded penalty.

Here's a better way of looking at it. Look at what other defenses did vs it. Check their rankings. But also check why a defenses did as good as we did or better. One off the top of my head is Vandy. Vandy knocked Sellers out early in the game. That is obvious going to change the offensive numbers on that matchup.

Another thing, LSU's defense is on the field more because our offense is so trash. Meaning, our defense has more time for some team to do something. Case in point, Ole Miss. If LSU has an average offense, Ole Miss doesn't score 20 points.
