Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ,” his long-delayed follow up to 2004’s “The Passion of the Christ,” has cast Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen (“The Last Kingdom”) in the role of Jesus, replacing original star Jim Caviezel.

Shooting started last week at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios on the film, with its main ensemble having been entirely recast. More than 20 years ago, Gibson shot the original “Passion of the Christ” at Cinecittà, which became one of the largest-grossing independent films of all time with a worldwide box office of $610 million. As previously announced, “The Resurrection of the Christ” will be split into two films, with each part set to release in 2027.

Mary Magdalene, a role held in “Passion” by Monica Bellucci, is being played in “Resurrection” by Cuban actress Mariela Garriga, who starred in the “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning” films as Marie. Polish-born actor Kasia Smutniak (“Domina”) is replacing Maia Morgenstern as Mary; Peter is being played by Italy’s Pier Luigi Pasino, who stars in Netflix Italy original “The Law According to Lidia Poët”; and the Pontius Pilate role will be played by Italy’s Riccardo Scamarcio, who recently led the Johnny Depp-directed biopic “Modì.” Rupert Everett will appear an unspecified small but important role.

quote:

Because of the time frame in which “The Resurrection of the Christ” takes place — three days after Christ’s crucifixion on Good Friday — “it made sense to recast the whole film,” a source close to the production told Variety. “They would have had to do all this CGI stuff, all this digital stuff — de-aging and all that — that would have been very costly,” the source noted.

I'm bummed but makes sense. Caviezel was pumped a year or so ago when he got the call from Gibson that production was going to begin soon.

Mariela Garriga looks pretty similar to Bellucci, but not so sure Ohtonen taking over for Caviezel. I trust Gibson though.

I knew this was going to happen.

It was never going to be a direct sequel to the first one and more of a stand-alone film. But that cast for the first movie was special.

The first film was a visceral, raw experience that stuck with everyone when they first saw it. This film will only hope to even capture a third of that feeling.

It’s looking more and more like Gibson is going the cheap, mainstream conventional route rather than making a deep, moving film that will stay with audiences forever. If he goes this route, I’ll have lost all respect for Gibson. His films were the reason I went to film school.

Why do you care? People change their minds about careers all the time when they realize they weren’t cut out for something. I love movies but I view it as simply a hobby now.

Are you dissing me because I said the film most likely won’t do as well as the first one and that Gibson is going the cash-grab route?

Jim Caviezel isn't exactly making huge bucks these days

He's too old and going the unknown route is a much better decision

Not sure i would have recasted.

I sort of get it, and trust Gibson, but the first film is such a monumental moment and experience. It is irreplaceable, buuuttt.....

Then your opinion on the matter is pointless.

Caviezel isn't very expensive these days and and that's in large part b/c well known for being a pain in the arse to work with.

I'd watch it if Mel Gibson did all the roles himself
