Gold= Never been in trouble
Red= Has gone to Captain's Mast (Non-judicial punishment)
Each hash is 4 years of service

Seriously? You have to carry a scarlet letter for a Captain's mast?

green like you see in the picture above, is essentially training..
Normally you would have a black "crow" designating enlisted with one chevron - three chevrons for rank...When you put a little half circle above the crow and use the chevrons, you have a Chief...Chiefs add stars for their rank, up to three, making a Command Master Chief..
Stripes on the sleeves towards the hands, are for years in service 4 for each one
When you hit 12 cumulative years, you swap those to Gold (If you're a pussy)
What you want to see is a CMC with 6xRed stripes on his sleeve, then you know you are working for the best

No disrespet to the other branches, but the Navy has the best traditions of all.

My nephew's uniform when he was first made a Chief. He went on to be a Master Chief over two stealth boat crews, and is now a Warrant Officer.
This thread has me wondering if he lost the red when he became a Warrant Officer.

Navy rank is confusing.
Captain's bars are lieutenant in the Navy.
Full Bird Colonel is a Captain in the Navy.
Buddy and me were walking to class out of formation in tech school at Chanute AFB.
Some guy walks past and starts screaming at us.
" Where is your salute, Airmen?"
"Uh, excuse me...why?"
" I am a United States Navy Warrant Officer! You salute me!"
"Sorry, we didn't learn about Warrant Officer protocol in Basic Training"
We saluted him and he walked off, fuming.
What a drama queen.

Pretty sure CWO is the one consistent insignia across all branches

Yeah but CWO’s are like unicorns. You hardly ever see them and they are quite stealthy so even recognizing them makes it difficult.

I made E3 three times and didn't get my first Good Conduct Medal until around year 7
I like to party

Officers (including WOs) dont have the red/gold chevrons... they only make enlisted folks do that.

So that one guy has been a sailor for 40 years but with poor conduct?
