I’ve been invited to take a six sigma program—is it gonna be worth my time?

Is it anything more than a resume padder?

Long answer short, yes. Do you have any questions? Is this an internal company program or a third party program?

The seven sigma program is better, but 6 isn't bad.

Just to level set, this can all be viewed as a pie in the sky concept.

I have a black belt and was a full-time PM doing process improvement projects for a couple years - depending what industry you're in, it can be worth it. I got the cert early in my career (15+ years ago) and still today it gives me some credibility in certain situations.

In manufacturing and some operations functions, what you learn can provide value - but it's much more difficult to apply the approach in a transactional (white collar) type of working environment.

If someone else is going pay for you to get a certification, I'd do it.

Yeah, certificate right on the wall.

Is it worth it? Other than a resume padder, not really to me. I never used it much and was on a couple of projects as a,"Champion", "Lead", or whatever it was.

But, having said that..

In fast-paced, transaction-driven environments such as call centers, employers often value Six Sigma, Lean, and PMP certifications for their emphasis on efficiency, consistency, and process control. Six Sigma and Lean help reduce errors and streamline workflows, which directly impacts customer satisfaction and operational costs. PMP-certified professionals bring structured project management skills that can improve onboarding, training programs, and system upgrades. These credentials signal a candidate’s ability to optimize performance, manage change, and lead initiatives that enhance service quality and throughput—key priorities in high-volume, customer-facing settings.

Agreed. 6 was better than 5.

I was a black belt at GE. There is value in it, if your role uses/needs it. At GE is was a natural part of our project planning process.

Comes down to utlizing DMAIC, DPMO, and a few others like pareto.

GE was big on Six Sigma and 5S (which is much more valuable if done right)

By someone trying to sell you a program, or buy your company offering it?

Also, it's completely worthless for most jobs/careers and is mostly used by people who don't really need it as a way to feel superior.

My old company made us take Six Sigma and then later made us take Lean Six Sigma. They paid for it and gave us time during work to complete so it wasn't a big deal. I will say I use more of the Lean stuff still than I ever did with the Six Sigma. But it's still pretty pointless.

1. Substantively, it’s stupid.

2. Resume padders are unfortunately helpful.

3. Just please for the love of God don’t become Six Sigma Guy.

I got my Yellow Belt a few years ago and was asked to get my green belt. I declined. I work in public health and thought it would look good on my resume and it did frick all to help. No interviewer even asked about it, and my Yellow Belt project helped save my organization $75k per year.

It’s for folks that the only time they stand out is on paper.

If you’re simple mindedand like a rigid approach to read/react to data, then go for it.

If you’re able to think on your feet and read the room, then it should all be hog wash to you.

Private equity loves them some data driven blood sucking.
