Honest opinion of Planet Fitness?

Gym I work out at just got bought out and converting to PF.
Currently it’s a big gym, lots of free weights, 6 squat/power racks, and full line of Hammer Strength machines. Of course rows of cardio that prob won’t change.
Have heard the jokes and punchlines about PF, but how exaggerated are they? Does PF have free weights or is it all just machines and light dumbbells?
I’m attracted to the $15/month just to sign and stay as it’s less than 2 miles from the house, but worried about what they’re going to convert to equipment wise. Anyone at a PF? Is it what all the punchlines are about?

This thread sucks. Most of your work sucks, but this is especially awful.

You were working at Fitness Project and now they're switching to Planet Fatass. If you want squat racks, bench press and dumbbells up to 150 then I would highly suggest that you leave them for a better option down 1488 called Texas Iron Republic unless you would like the free pizza on Fridays.

Bingo. Was there at 5am this morning. No pizza.
They haven’t started changing out equipment yet. I haven’t noticed some of the usual morning eye candy tho.

most of the time they have smith machine only, no barbells. dumbbells usually up to 70. plenty of machines and cardio
i mean if you know what you are are doing you can get a great workout. Now are you going to get crazy strong or do powerlifting or just any basic barbell work....no, but you can do things like DC training there to get strong and other methods similar to rest pause.

I work out there. I'm old. Plenty of free weights and benches. Also, plenty of equipment, including cardio machines.
They just replaced ALL the machines and most of the benches. Everything in there is brand new now.
I think it's a great deal. I see older people, fatter people, and also muscle head meat heads working out there. The only thing they very much frown upon is the loud grunters, and slamming weights. Otherwise, it's got everything you want at a great price. At least the one where I live does.
Locker rooms are nice as well. It's worth it to upgrade to a Black Card IMO.

I go there. I’m just trying to stay in decent shape, not be a bodybuilder
Ours has some free weights. 4 benches, a couple of squat racks, 2 smith machines.
It’s definitely a small portion of the gym. Most is cardio, machines, and the circuit area

The one I go to has PLENTY of barbells and benches. At least 8 or so. And plenty of free weights to use on them, many of them brand new.
I know of at least one competition body builder that works out there (older dude though).

I don’t like it because there are no barbells. I can’t lift the way i want to lift.
I can’t do squats or bench without using a smith machine.
Deadlifting, cleans, and snatches are not allowed in there

The problem is you get a lot of young kids in there that sit on the equipment staring at their phones for 10-15 minutes between sets. You’ve got people doing wild shite with machines, especially the cables. The crowds differ wildly based on location though. The one I went to in NJ this summer was stacked

is that new? i heard they were reintroducing barbells, racks and benches at some locations I think late last year and early this year.
I know most dont have, or atleast didnt as of 2 years ago, barbells
either way...you can get a great workout and even truely train there if you know what you are doing.

Definitely push hard to keep all the power racks and barbells. They’re already there, no point in removing them. Make it a point to let any new employees know that this gym is home to dedicated lifters and there will be heavy deads/bench/squats, grunting etc.
