According to this study BR is the most dangerous city for bikers or walkers. LINK

It seems like BR is always spending money to make walking/biking better, but I guess like everything else, it is mostly not making any impact

quote:

Baton Rouge, LA, takes the top spot as the deadliest city for pedestrians and cyclists to walk or ride a bike. The numbers are shocking, with a pedestrian fatality score of 98, a cyclist fatality score of 100, and a combined pedestrian and cyclist fatality score of 100. Additionally, the fatality rate compared to the state average was 98. Baton Rouge also has a walk score of 32 and a bike score of 30. Contributing factors include a lack of sidewalks and bike lanes, coupled with poor lighting, as well as a large number of distracted drivers."

Nobody uses the bike paths on top of the levee, on government street, etc.

But they'll ride in traffic on Highland Road. I've seen them exercising on River Road at 6AM in fog even though there is a bike bath on top of the adjacent levee.

I walk through a neighborhood most nights and I can’t tell you how often I have to jump off the road because cars are absolutely flying and drivers are on their phones.

Maybe a super expensive car will hit me one day

This is a neighborhood that often has kids playing outside and on bikes too.

I think that Baton Rouge south of Government Street was designed with a specific purpose, to make it difficult as possible to easily move across town.

The land is as flat as can be and the only physical barrier is the east-west railroad track. If preventing cross-town migration was not the intent, then there was no intent at all in laying out the city.

Not a surprise at all. Between distracted drivers and very few dedicated lanes; I wouldn't bike any notable distance in BR.

The only dedicated bike lanes that I can think of are the greenway leaving downtown down North Blvd and East; Government Street; and Capital Heights.

Pedestrian-wise, the sidewalks are mostly shoulder less, 4 ft wide sidewalks next to 45 mph traffic.

I assumed the black guys riding pit bikes in the bike lane down government street improved safety.

Is loitering in the middle of the road considered “walking”. What about standing in the road to watch someone do Burnouts?

Probably because BR has the most self-entitled drivers in the world

agree with this, because they don't really go to/from anywhere (as of now at least)

A trainer at my old gym was hit and killed on a bike, on his way home from work. Left behind a young daughter and an ex with whom he was reconciling, and just the day before he was hit, we were having a conversation where I told him I would never commute on a bike in BR.

I do. That’s why I am still with us. But someone is going to hit a kid going at least double the speed limit one day.

This is an area with a 25mph speed limit, fwiw. I wish the cops would hide like they used to. Had to be a goldmine.

And get off your phone?

There was a super pricey car I considered playing chicken with last night. $$$

No sidewalks at all. I walk on the edge, so I’m not in the middle of the road. Easy to get out of the way.

FWIW, I see at least 4 or 5 other people out walking nightly. It’s common in the area.

think I see your biggest problem. But to your point about distracted drivers, I agree. Sitting at traffic lights and watching the amount of people on their phones is maddening ( and a little scary). Especially when the light goes green and they just sit there immersed in their phone.

Be safe.

There is your answer.

The BR/EBR government allows developers to build whatever they want, wherever they want, with ZERO consideration for the infrastructure to facilitate traffic to, through, and from the new developments.

Just look at Nicholson Hwy as one example. Developers are putting up new subdivisions, on both sides of the road, from LSU to Iberville Parish. Yet, Nicholson remains the same 2 lane highway it's been forever.

Anyone who doesn’t see bikers on the levee isn’t looking very hard. It’s extremely popular, especially now that the lakes are difficult to circumnavigate.

I also see pedestrians and bikers quite a bit on the newish Hyacinth paths. Once the looming Lee Drive expansion is done—complete with bike paths—it will be a huge improvement.

I have this dream of a combination bottomland trail slash boardwalk along Bayou Duplantier that would connect Stanford, LSU, and the Lakes with the Dawson Creek Greenway and Perkins Road Park. Complete with connector trails to all the neighborhoods that back up to the bayou. Will never happen, but a guy can dream.

ETA the biggest problem spots in BR are Florida Blvd and Airline Hwy. Every other week some knuckle dragger gets mowed down trying to wander across a huge busy road.
