Gov. Jeff Landry announced Thursday that tolls will be suspended for the new Belle Chasse Bridge as officials investigate the numerous complaints made by residents that the tolls have been exorbitantly high.

Landry posted a video to social media of him standing in the Superdome next to Plaquemines Parish President Keith Hinkley and state Rep. Jacob Braud, R-Belle Chasse, in which he says he's placed the company responsible for the tolls, Plenary Infrastructure Belle Chasse, "on notice" and suspended all tolls for the time being.

The announcement comes days after Landry blamed former Gov. John Bel Edwards in another social media video for negotiating "a terrible deal" with Plenary regarding bridge tolls, and said he planned to give relief to Plaquemines Parish residents soon.

“We’re going to get a better deal," said Gov. Jeff Landry in his latest video. "A better deal for Plaquemines, a better deal for Louisiana, and we are going to keep our infrastructure rolling.”

Plenary spokesperson Angela Noote said Thursday evening the company had received the order from Landry and suspended bridge tolls.

The $170 million Belle Chasse Bridge opened last March, nearly a year after the target date, in the state's first public-private partnership of its kind. The state fined Plenary $10,000 per day for the delays, totaling over $3 million.

Tolling started May 14, after at least 12 construction-related delays since March.

Good for Landry. The entire thing is a boondoggle.

The $170 million Belle Chasse Bridge

Outof that $170m, the New York contractor put up $66 million of its own money, and they stand to collect $726m in tolls over 30 years. That's $660m in profit or 1,000%. Plaquemines' politicians hung them out to dry.

I wonder how much per month they spend collecting a toll. And have a handful of people staffing an office in Golden Meadow to sell tags and fulfill requests and answer toll complaints via phone.

"will be"...or "are"???

I'd like to go eat at Salvo's tonight without getting a $10 toll ticket in the mail.

You live on the westbank?

It's more like a $25 "administrative fee" plus the toll. If they stay in place longterm, just get a toll tag. It costs non-residents only $1.13 with a tag and no threat of the extra fee.

I mean, I just recently used the bridge to go from Gen DeGaulle to Belle Chase, but that obviously wasn't the toll bridge...

Westwego. It'd be nice to not have to drive to & through Algiers back to Belle Chasse just to avoid the toll since I don't have a tag.

LA Highway 23 at the Intracoastal Canal, where the Belle Chasse Tunnel used to be.

I grew up in the subdivision right off Barriere Road and my brother lives in Jesuit Bend. He's totally livid about the bridge and the contract that will pay the contractor a massive amount of money.

No that's the bridge to English Turn/Belle Chasse you went over. Once in Belle Chasse If you would have turned right at the railroad tracks, opposite direction of the high school, the toll bridge would have been a mile away.

After crossing the toll bridge go through a couple lights and you come to the intersection where Behrman highway becomes Lapalco.

I used to eat there 2-3 times a month, haven’t been back since they started collecting tolls.
