How many baws here have a wife/daughter/sister who fell prey to the MLM "influencer" scam?

MLM stands for Multi Level Marketing...and it's a barely legal from of a pyramid scheme (if it's set up properly) but most are actually illegal pyramid schemes. This is the stay at home moms who pay to join a network and start selling haircare products or vitamins etc

Ex-wife - Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, and Creative Memories.
She did a lot of work to not have to have a real job.

Does the "Bomb Party" craze on TikTok qualify as a MLM?

SIL falls within that category with mobile spray tanning and selling Arbonne. She has the personality of a sponge and no education outside of HS, so it makes sense why she thought she would make money off of it.

This could be a legitimate small business if you hustle and are professional and reliable

Fortunately the wife hasn't gone this route. My sister did though. It's funny how they know the outcome for 99% of the people in the pyramid don't make the money the schemers loop them into, but they convince themselves that they're going to be in the 1% club.

Wait, wives can have a real job too? I didn't know that and I will have to tell my wife that she was simply unemployed the last 25 years, not "retired" as she claims.

I’m confused. Are you just talking about general “fake entrepreneurialism” on social media? Because I don’t think that’s specific to MLM or women.

A good friend of mine got suckered into the MonaVie juice scam like 15 years ago.

She lost a *lot* of money, as she was young and struggling post-recession. But she also lost a lot of friends who just didn't want to buy that shite.

The prominent MLM setups are not classic pyramid schemes. The main difference is they don't force Karen to buy $5K of product on the front end. That was always the big scam with pyramids - just to get started, you had to write a big check. I think now they actually give Karen her starting inventory for free.

Wife did one. Made $240k one year. Our CPA said something along the lines of “well you’re the exception to that rule.”

She did well for like 3ish years, it started to dwindle off, and she let it die. Fun little run while it lasted. If you had to rely on it for anything more than extra money coming in to help with other investments, paying down mortgage, etc; yikes.
