I'm about a third of the way through. The tv series comes nowhere close to describing the horror of the weeks following the superflu.

Also, I caught a cold as soon as I started reading. Throat is killing me.

My favorite part of any apocalypse story is the parts watching how society crumbles. Thats always fascinated me. I never gave a rats arse about any of the Walking Dead stuff, but i did watch the first few episodes of Fear the Walking Dead because it chronicled how the end of civilization went down. The best 5 minutes of The Last of Us is the mad rush to freeways and airports in the first episode as everything begins to collapse.

Reading that for the first time when Covid was ramping up wasn’t the best decision for me lol.

It’s a great book. So many stories within the story. It is a bit disjointed though. Almost like two books. Before they get to Colorado and after they get there.

The chapter full of “aftershock” deaths like the guy who went swimming in Lake Tahoe was one of my favorite parts.

reading The Stand...
as a single work, it is King's best.

And it isn't close

I re-read it from time to time

I read both The Stand and Dr Mary’s Monkey during COVID. After those two I needed something to make me laugh so I read Slaughterhouse Five.

I agree and we hardly ever get to see enough of that. There is this mad dash to get to the story post collapse when that part may be the most mysterious

Read it like 8 years ago(the unabridged version) - its a long one but a great story.

I agree the lengthy description of how society falls apart and people attempt to rebuild what is left is very satisfying and fun to read.

At 90% (on the Kindle). I'll finish up today. It has been worth the read. I'd love to see a similar book without the magic and religion. Just a putting shite back together deal.

I read the unabridged version back in the early/mid 90s. At that time I had a job where I mainly babysat equipment so I had a lot of time to read. The world creation in the early part of the book was so good that when I left work at the end of the day it would feel weird to see so many people out driving around.

the sociopath woman who accidentally locks herself in the freezer. there's a line that says something like "it was too warm to freeze to death but not to starve" - such a good line

I read The Stand in 1979 as a teen. I don’t remember many details at all, i remember I loved it. But the one part of the book I remember is when the kid walked through the tunnel, the Lincoln Tunnel maybe, at the beginning of the book I think. I remember goosebumps.
