Evidently, beginning next spring, we will go back to the closed primary voting for the US Senate, House, Louisiana Supreme Court, Public Service Commissioner, and BESE board.

KLFY

That means if you're a registered Democrat and no Democrats are running for anything, you get to save your gas and not show up at the voting booth. The same works on the Republican side.

Now if you're an "unaffiliated" voter, all bets are off and you can go.

Back in the day, when virtually everyone (that I knew) was a Democrat, and we had nothing but Democrat candidates, Republicans had no voice and you just stayed home.

Somehow, I'm not too sure about these changes and if it's not broke, why fix it? I'm predicting more re-registration to Unaffiliated.

Are you saying that today's voting system isn't broken? Pretty wild take IMO

The downside to open primaries is having the opposing party flood the ballots.

I did that, albeit it was disgusting. In the Texas Dem primary voted for Obama over Hillary, to deny her Texas. Little did I know he would end up being worse than her. She would have just made lots and lots of money. I doubt the Dem party would be what it is, today, without Obama.

About to change my registration now. Closed primaries are undemocratic.

Got one last week. The good news is if no Republican gets more than 50% in the primary election, it goes to a runoff with the top two vote getters. This will keep Cassidy from getting the nomination the first go around.

This… who in Louisiana really wanted this? This reeks of something national people told us to do and historically that’s not something our state wants

The term in Louisiana is “no party.” And if you were listed as independent then the state moved you to “no party.”

You can choose which primary you vote in, as no party, but you can only vote for that party in the primary. For example, you can’t vote democrat for school board and then also vote republican for judge.

I'm assuming that this was done to prevent people from crossing party lines in the primary to ensure the other party's best candidate does not make the general election.

I suspect that if all of a sudden there is a large increase in unaffiliated voters they will amend the law to keep them from voting in closed primaries.

Learned something new. I registered as a Republican because I thought if you were listed as a "no party" you could not vote in closed primaries.

Why should a Republican get to help choose the democrat candidate or vice versa? The players of one football team do not get to vote for who leads their opponents' team.

If I am an American citizen, why do I have to be a member of a party to vote? As an Independent, who is certainly conservative, I get to avoid all of the marketing associated with campaigns.

What a relief it is!!

As "no party" you can also declare right there at the polling location which primary you want to vote in:

quote:

No Party voters who choose to participate in the Closed-Party Primary will be able to select a party’s ballot at their polling place and must stay with that party through any necessary runoff.
sos.la.gov

I am guessing there will be a little learning curve for the poll workers when it's first implemented.

I've been an independent since the late 80s, however, for some reason I get stuff from both parties but mostly from the Republicans.

That's because they both purchase the voter registration rolls and then target the people that are independent (no party). You probably also get more texts and calls during election season than people registered as Democrat or Republican because they are trying to get your vote since you don't have a candidate.

If you look at it overall, comparing Hillary and Obama is like comparing cat shite to dog shite. Neither one has any redeeming qualities compared to the other.
