Curren$y (Shante Franklin), the New Orleans-based rapper, was honored with the Key to the City of New Orleans by Mayor LaToya Cantrell in September 2025 for his contributions to the city's culture and community through his music and business ventures like Jet Life Athletics. This symbolic award recognizes his significant achievements and status as a "true son of New Orleans"

quote:

Shante Scott Franklin, better known by his stage name Currensy, is an American rapper. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, he signed with the local record labels Cash Money Records and Young Money Entertainment in the mid-2000s, but parted ways with both without any major releases.

quote:

Curren$y has been arrested at least once, notably before a show on "The Stoned Immaculate Tour" in Dallas, according to www.revolt.tv. While his rap persona and lifestyle are associated with cannabis, the search results do not provide details on other arrests or the specific charges related to the 2013 incident.

quote:

Curren$y, Spitta Andretti, the Hot Spitta; has become a premier name in underground Hip-Hop over the last 20 years now

Hopefully, relatively soon, LaToya the Destroya will be handing out honorary keys of Cellblock D at Fort Leavenworth.

What a joke

He’s from New Orleans, is a successful musician and the arrest was for smoking weed. I don’t see why there’s an issue with this other than Latoya being involved. Willie Nelson has received keys to cities before I’m sure.

Is this how she is putting in 11-12 hour days? Researching local artists to see how gets the next "key to the city"?

Is this the equivalent to Shedeur having his jersey retired at Colorado?

I'm with this statement but I do not know what his contributions to the city are. I feel like one needs to stand out in that regards. If he has done a lot of charity work then it is a good thing to recognize him. It doesn't seem to be an R Kelly or Hurricane Chris issue

My favorite NOLA rapper.

Grew up listening to his mixtapes.

He drives around all the time in a 90s benz with "Jetlife" euro plates. I see him a lot.
