It’s always a 10 when you lose a great player. But we will be fine.

It’s big but at least it’s a position with quality depth.

I know it was just SLU but last week 97 and 17 (both 17s actually) showed they have the ability to play.

You probably wont even notice he is gone. Depth isnt an issue this yr

This is not a knock on Reliford and more of a testament to how good and deep our defense is, but it’s about a 2.

How did our defense look without Whit against Florida?

If none of the other DEs get injured it is zero impact. But if we suffer more losses there it will hurt.

Reilford is a solid player, so losing him sucks.

However the drop off between him and the next man up isn’t massive like it is at other positions. I’d put it at a 5

No it isn’t. There might be 5 guys on the team that it would be a “10.”

4, but in some years it is a 6/7, we have the depth this season to take some injuries, but we need to go another 1-2 games without losing anyone.

It’s a solid 7 but we also have very capable backups and freshmen.

3 at best

We have multiple players that can step in and not miss a beat, so saying we could lose another at the position is bogus too.

He was a solid player, not a difference maker.

It would hurt worse if we didnt have the depth we built up there, I think Butler is coming off a really good game, he will get more snaps, and Carpenter looks like he will step up a little more and he's been around for a few years now.

Not just having to turn to a true freshman is key here.

If we had to throw a ture freshman out there for 15-20 snaps a game suddenly, this would probably be a 6 or 7. With Butler just getting some more looks who is pretty good and Carpenter getting some more snaps mostly, it's more like a 3 or 4.

I'd say a 5

But if we have another DE injury, it moves to an 8

To me, more of the impact is on getting experience for next year. He's slated to be one of our main starters at DE next year

He was great in rotation. I hope that spot stays productive despite his absence.

It sucks to lose a good recruit but in this day and age, NIL $$ is a driving force. LSU recruiting/evaluating staff seems to be top notch and can fill needs immediately through the portal, mixing them in with the current roster.

I am very pleased with Kelly and his ability to adapt, evaluate, use the portal, and manage NIL.

This.

In fact, that's kind of what you would say about all of LSU's DEs this year. They've all been solid, but not necessarily difference makers. To contrast, in the first 4 games last season Swinson had 5 sacks and 6 TFLs. Compare that two LSU's 4 primary DEs (Reliford, Payton, Pyburn, Butler) who COMBINED have 1.5 sacks and 6 TFLs
