He argued in court that he wasn't really going to assassinate the President, but that he wanted to and thought about it.
ETA: He stated the gun didn't actually work and called in a ballistics expert to testify on his behalf.
The expert fired the bullet that was already in the chamber when the police confiscated the gun during his arrest.
What an idiot.

One of his questions to potential jurors, pre trial, was " if you see a turtle in the road, would you stop & help get it off the road?" The trial judge tossed over 30+ such questions, as well as many trial witnesses' questions. He's a whacko.

No cameras were allowed in court room. Reporters were allowed but could only take written notes.
