I was at this parade as I live in the Ottawa region. Not only was this group intent on disrupting the parade, they then marched THROUGH the street festival after the parade was cancelled where may booths were set up with local resources for our community.

In a time where LGBTQ rights are being targeted, this group decided Gaza/Palestine takes precident over our community. This doesn't make sense to me. Of course I don't agree with what's going on in Gaza/Palestine, but what message does it sent to Queer youth and our community that we can't celebrate without a group hijacking things for their own personal agenda?

They have NO RIGHT blocking pride events simply to make their own point. They live in the west? Then abide by the norms, traditions and laws of the west. Make a date. Announce it to the city and state. Ask for a time and place and protest peacefully instead of hijacking what other people spend time and effort doing.

And for all the people who want to rage comment after skimming. This isn’t a denunciation of Palestine or the movement or the horrible living situation in Gaza and the West Bank. It’s a denunciation of the shitty behavior that keeps repeating in Canada and other Western nations which shoves its ugly head any time Gay people seem to celebrate their existence. The fact that pride parades keep getting hijacked by pro Palestinian protestors eventually leads any sane person to think that they’re not just protesting against Israel. They’re also protesting against our own right to exist and be happy.

Like way to ruin everyone’s day. I get the point of the protest, but WHY did it have to interrupt today? It was f*cking rude to outcast the joy of so many marginalized groups when thousands showed up to celebrate it. Yes what is happening over there is awful and what some people said was stupid/ uncalled for, but it has literally nothing to do with pride in this sense. So many things happening in the world are terrible and everything is literally on fire, so we need some joy when we can get it. People worked hard and spent money to decorate their floats. They spent countless hours planning and anticipating for what was supposed to be a glorious celebration of inclusivity and love. I just can’t wrap my brain around why things happened the way it did AND this was something that was planned all along? I’m so frustrated uuughhghg

I mean for one day… we couldn’t make it about someone else? They have weekly protests, in Ottawa, that NEVER get interrupted! Seems to me that they don’t have the tact nor decency to let another group have their day… WE LET YOU HAVE YOURS!

The backlash regular LGBTQ+ people would get from hijacking their protests… we’d probably be arrested for disturbing the peace or violence would breakout! It’s hard to support a cause when all they do is assert themselves in situations that are uncalled for.

I get that lots of innocent lives are at risk and it sucks but for one day, let someone else have the spotlight… especially when your protests aren’t interrupted and PEOPLE IN THE PARADE THEMSELVES were already and visibly supporting your cause!
