I get on it now and am thankful my friends list is normal. Even those with other points are either empathetic or quiet. But, if I scroll, AI brings me to places of viewpoints that I despise. Is this helpful? I get angry reading some of the comments and want to break the face of people who I will never meet.

According to Google, "Social media AI brings you viewpoints you hate primarily because the algorithms are designed to maximize engagement, and outrage is a powerful form of engagement. These systems are not optimized for your happiness or well-being but rather to keep you on the platform for as long as possible, showing you more ads. This incentive structure can lead to content that triggers strong emotional reactions, both positive and negative, to spread more widely."

I keep hearing the media say we have a mental helath crisis. But, what other variable other than technology has grown so expotentially the past generation. I feel the corelation is strong. You get into the echo chamber and easily radicalized when you only allow yourself to listen to the views you support and then make the other side the enemy.

It’s not helping

Back in the day, the village idiot stayed in his own village. Now they all congregate on social media.

Social media is destroying civility, the family, modesty, and in general our entire society.

Many multiples. The country is awash in propaganda. People have been retarding themselves with it in prolific form for over twenty years. I think this shite really started going off the rails post-9/11. It’s been a steady decline, people are definitely dumber on the whole, cannot discern truth from lie. And the lies are bountiful.

Social media has turned politics into the dumbest of all the dumb religions. Even Islam

When you’re given a medium, an alternate reality if you will, where you’re free to spew retarded and socially unacceptable rhetoric and behavior without the ability to see people’s immediate in-the-moment reactions to it, you tend to start believing you’re either right or that you have permission to be a dumbass. There’s an entire generation that has grown up in this alternate reality filled with people’s filtered responses as opposed to genuine reactions who are now old enough to obtain guns, ammo, and other weapons.

It’s a perfect recipe for disaster and we’re seeing it unfold all the time in America now.

No, but to suggest increased polarization isn't present is not true either. Many watch and read media that support their personal viewpoints, more people live in solid Red or Blue districts now than ever before, and the lack of discourse in debate has been dead and continues to decline.

Social media has completely fragmented the messaging we receive and created a point in time where there is no such thing as factual information.

Constant media in general is horrible for us, especially when the majority of it is negative and full of violence.

People have become simultaneously desensitized to violence and bombarded with rage bait. It's a terrible combination.

I dont get on much but was sent a link on there today and it seemed to aggregate the most fringe batshit takes to the top.

No wonder everyone is so angry all the time if they see that stuff and think that represents the common person.

There are also a lot of political neophytes who have inserted themselves into the various discussions, who are being led by dishonest brokers who create content online for this reason. So their entire political worldview and education is built around this toxic paradigm.

There was a crazy man in the woods that warned us about technology and man’s downfall with it.. went about it the wrong way, but seems to be right nevertheless

Social media and main stream media. Twitter is the only thing with balanced politics.
