Electric bikes (aka slow motorcycles) in middle school

“Electric bikes,” some of which are basically little motorcycles, have exploded in the Houston suburb where I live. Middle school kids are riding these things all over - sidewalks, roads, feeder roads for interstate. My 13 year old is hounding me for one saying he will save up and purchase one for himself and he can’t go ride around with his friends after school. For reference, this is the model several of his friends own. Tuttio
The top speed is 37 MPH. I’ve already checked the laws in Texas, and you need a motorcycle license to drive anything that goes that fast. But still these things are everywhere, and I’ve yet to see anyone ticketed. I grew up in the country riding three wheelers and the one rule was that you can’t take it onto a public road. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Are y’all seeing the same thing where you live?

My son has the tuttio, and now is upgrading to the Talaria
I would never let him ride on the roads. He only rides at my buddies camp and my bosses ranch

This is a natural progression from a bunch of closet swinger parents riding around drunk in their golf carts around the neighborhoods.

Same. I let my kid ride 4 wheelers when we are out in the country. He doesn’t seem to understand the difference between open land and a suburban setting. I have no idea why no one is getting ticketed. These kids literally ride these things to school every day.

Don’t recommend it in places other vehicles will be

Also, my son upgraded the controller and the tuttio now goes 52-55
He’s 11

And the thing that is even more mind boggling is that this is an affluent area. These parents are allowing their kids to break state law, and I bet they have zero insurance on these things. They are going to lose everything they own when one of their middle school kids hits.a pedestrian on a sidewalk. Worst case scenario their kid or.a passenger on their bike gets killed. I really can’t wrap my head around this shite. I feel like I’m missing something.

My kid tells me this, too. And the kids ride them to school along the sidewalks and roads.

We must live close to each other. I have seen kids doing wheelies down memorial 3 different times in the last week. Had never seen kids riding them on bigger roads until then, just through neighborhoods

Kids on those were speeding on the bike paths around white rock lake this summer and the cops cracked down on them . Saw one little punk going full speed being chased by a cop car. Hopefully they hauled his entitled little arse downtown.

Got my 4yo an electric bike and he whips it all over the neighborhood and town
The suggested age is 13yo so it’s a little oversized and probably goes 25mph if I had to guess

I take my 9 yo son’s burrowmax to campus. First time I learned about a death wobble. Going over the handlebars on a grade schoolers bike at 30mph isn’t something I planned for.

If the bike can go 37 MPH, a 13 year old has no business riding it anywhere besides open country. They don’t even understand basic traffic laws at that age.

I have an Aventon Aventura E-bike that I pedal around on the roads of my gated golf course community. Speed limit here is 25mph, traffic is limited and controlled. The bike's max speed is 28mph but I've gotten it up to 42mph on one of the longer hills. Anything faster like the ones the OP is talking about would be too fast for the community and I'm not trying to draw negative attention, I'm just trying to get a little exercise.

They are all over our neighborhood. I see kids riding them down the street regularly with no issue. My kid is talking about getting one for college next year, great way to get around campus.

I can see that, but I’m talking about middle schoolers, not college kids.

These are an issue around my workplace. Kids seem to ride mostly on the sidewalks, but will cross the street and turn erratically. No signaling, no warning, and no looking. They just go. They're have been accidents. Honestly surprised there haven't been any fatalities yet (at least that I've heard about).
