All I want from this season is to prove Kellen Moore can coach

To me that's the most important part of this entire season.
Obviously a one game sample size but there were things I liked and things that could be questionable.
First, the negatives (and calling these negatives is kind of a stretch):
- His demeanor is very calm. Maybe a little too calm, and maybe I just have PTSD from watching Dennis Allen look clueless and emotionless on the sideline. His personality seems to be calm and analytical, and if that works then so be it. Not every coach needs to be a fiery, passionate coach to get through to their players.
- Not using timeouts at the end of the half. For the situation the Saints are in, I think I'd rather see Moore make mistakes because he's too aggressive rather than being too passive. But much like young players, he also will make mistakes. He has to be allowed to learn and grow from them.
- Penalties. Pre-snap penalties were out of control. I expect this to get cleaned up as the offense gets more live snaps. (kudos to BigBrod81)
The positives, which I think outweigh anything that was negative:
- The team played for him. Down 20-10, this game could easily have been a blowout but the Saints D made plays and the offense did enough to almost tie it at the end. The Cardinals are a mediocre team, but are better than us from a talent standpoint almost across the board.
- The offense actually wasn't that bad. After the first drive I thought oh boy, here we go, but I liked how Moore got all the back involved and called a game that protected Rattler. Rattler won't win you a game himself and needs things simplified for him, and I feel Moore did a good job calling a game within the skills of his players.
We know this season will be rough and the wins for this teams will be sparse. This is mostly due to just a complete lack of talent on both sides of the ball. But if Moore can coach these players up, and have them buying into what he's selling, then I look forward to when we can start adding young talent to this team.

Offensive line penalties. Gotta get that shite cleaned up asap. Ruiz still sucks though.

Feel like this is pretty common for a lot of the young OC types. Even the most successful ones like McVay were pretty reserved initially and seem to get a bit more vocal as they get a few skins on the wall.

Can someone help me understand not using any timeouts towards the end of the first half? I was blowing a gasket. They could have had some time left to go at least attempt a field goal even if it he would have just called one.
Instead they got it down to what 40 seconds or less, they call a run play where people could have gotten hurt for nothing. Why not just kneel it if they were not even going to try? That made ZERO sense to me.

Oh that's a good one. Can't believe I forgot it but yes, pre-snap penalties have to be cleaned up and addressed.
The refs were completely out of control yesterday and really impacted the enjoyment of the game.

I think he just overthought it. Or, he didn't want to put Rattler in a pressure situation where a costly turnover could happen right before the half and Arizona still had their timeouts.

I guess my 2 big things are:
1. First stint as NFL coach, so there will be bumps in the road.
2. Not a LOT to work with at this point on the offensive side of the ball. Needs to feed the RB way more. 22 total attempts between Kamara, Miller, Neal and QB included is not enough.

In the post game press conference he alluded to AZ still having 3 timeouts remaining before the half when they were about to score. Although he didn't elaborate further, my thinking is he was concerned about going 3 and out and giving them
the ball once more before the half, and better to take it in down only one score. Probably a combination of overanalysis, nerves, and inexperience, that I expect should get better

The not calling the timeouts showed me he has a ton to learn in the game management department.
I thought overall they played better than I expected. Penalties were a big issue but that’s nothing new. DA’s teams were heavily penalized.
You really won’t be able to judge Moore until he gets his hands on an actual QB.

Actually makes a lot of sense. We were in the game. Even if he was overthinking it at least he was thinking.

Another positive: 2nd half adjustments. Like you said, it's a 1 game sample size, but so far it looked like him & Staley made some really good 2nd half adjustments. At the very least, it was a lot better than the lack of 2nd half adjustments we watched last season

I’ve been saying I really think we have three big bucket priorities this season:
- Establish the coaching staff & see if they are good schematically
- Play young players and see what we have in them
- Find out what we have at QB so we can go into next draft knowing if we should take one
All of these things are, imo, way more important than wins or losses this season.
With this in mind I agree with your post. I’d also add that I feel, at least just with one game so far, really good about Staley and the defensive scheme. This defense is not that talented but played really well yesterday against a pretty good offense (and an OL that some considered easily top 10 at the end of last season), they held them to <100 yds and 3 points in the second half. Great showing.

We got the ball back with 23 seconds and 3 timeouts left at our own 30. We needed to push for a FG Attempt there.

That's a good line of thinking, and what I thought played into it, although I was yelling to call the TO.
I think after 1st down he was hoping for good stop on 2nd then when that didn't happen is when I think he really thought what you mentioned above. By waiting he put himself in a more vulnerable position versus if he had been more aggressive and called a TO after 1st.
It's a learning for sure, though I do recall Payton shooting himself in the foot in similar situations calling those TOs.
1st down short run=Saints TO
2nd down short run=Saints TO
3rd down successfully converted.
Then opponent opens the play book and still has one or two TOs of their own to use, and end up scoring on the drive. Whereas had we not called TOs, even though they converted on 3rd down there probably would not have been enough game clock to get in scoring position.

In a vacuum I agree for sure. But we’ve all seen teams be both really aggressive in those situations and those that just seem happy to get to halftime. I’d assume his line of thinking in game one with relative inexperience at qb was we’re in this, let’s not shoot ourselves in the foot before halftime.

If not for 83 being himself, we may have won in OT. I think Moore can coach. Just needs at least a year or two to build his roster and clear some cap space again. Oh, and we may need a QB.

I believe that this first game will give Moore a chance to see who has 'it' and who doesn't. This is even more evident after a full regular season game vs. preseason.
I see the RBs getting way more touches this next game.

Well said Zom not much to argue.
I would like to see heavy sets for the run game and two back sets more if CKM is watching.
As said just want to see a better functioning team and sideline by the end of the year. And I know there will be heavy personnel changes before the start of next camp.
