The leftists love using this term, but have no idea what they are talking about

The AR in AR-15 stand for Armilite Rifle, because that was the name of the company that developed it

Additionally, is my deer rifle an “assault rifle”? It has a magazine and is semi automatic.

People are stupid.

It's called being as dramatic as possible to demonize the AR-15

Good grief, I hope they never find out about the little ole, wimpy AR-10

I even hear that the semi-auto weapons spray dozens of bullets with one trigger pull.

Yeah, how can you even take the libtards seriously with asinine comments such as that one

It’s the ones that reel off 30 clips with a magazine.

They are fully semi-automatic as well. So dangerous!

Or better yet, what’s an assault weapon? Because I think I can make a pretty convincing argument that a baseball bat would qualify as one.

It's been a few years since I've checked the data, but according to FBI violent crime statistics blunt force kills more people per year than all rifles combined, not just military style rifles.

I have no problem with weapons being called assault rifles. I mean, that’s exactly what it was designed for. It actually is a “weapon of war.” Theres no sense in denying it.

Should have no bearing on me being allowed to own one though.

It’s used to distinguish it from all those calm, quiet, conversational negotiation rifles. Duh.

Any inanimate object can be turned into an assault weapon by the wielder. It’s a catch phrase to make the black guns more scary to the sheeple

All weapons could be conceivably be called "assault weapons" if used in assault.

So, when they take all the ar-15's, what then will be called a weapon of war of assault weapon to Democrat machine

Many democrats would love nothing more than to ban everything. They believe no one has a need for a firearm even grand pappy’s single shot 12 ga.

Everyone knows that the AR-15 is 50% more dangerous than the wimpy AR-10... its basic math (although I'm hesitant to point that out because everyone also knows that math is racist)

Wait until they find out that the most dangerous assault weapons are attached to the ends of our arms!

It dates back to the introduction of the Sturmgewehr 44 by Germany near the end of WW2. It's round was between a rifle and pistol in range and power (intermediate) and it could switch between semi-automatic and fully-automatic. The term assault reflected the ability to bring highly mobile machine gun like firepower on the move while outgunning and out ranging semi automatic pistols and fully automatic machine pistols.

This distinction is still what the US Military considers to be an assault rifle. Selective fire, intermediate round, detachable box magazine.

A semi-automatic varmint rifle is not an assault rifle, but you'll be told it is. They'll call a Ruger 10/22 an assault rifle.

Back in the 1990's, just before the 1994 AWB was passed, this was actually a stated goal of major gun-control organizations. I'll have to find it again but there was a set of meeting notes that summarized the 5 - 10 year goals of one gun control org to keep pushing more laws after the AWB was signed, eventually they wanted to outlaw all civilian possession of firearms. They truly believed this was possible back then, they didn't realize they had peaked and it's been downhill for the loons ever since.
