Probably like most laymen, prior to Covid, I trusted the CDC as strictly a science based, helpful institution. Any professionals care to comment on the CDC?

Is it getting better or worse under MAHA? (FWIW, Kennedy and Gabbard were my favorite appointments.)

I've never trusted the CDC since they demanded that gun violence is an epidemic and that justifies a ban on guns.

Despite the nay sayers the CDC has been doing exactly what their name says. "Center for Disease Control".

They promote the disease and control the solutions to the disease to your detriment. And now that people have learned how to make the disease more deadly they have been doing that too. If the disease doesn't kill you no problem we have a pill or a shot to finish you off... but only after we make money off of you first.

Is anything really
quote:

science based
? Are is that code for ‘political based’?

I know the federal reserve being “independent” really just means stacked with libs

That’s a no for me dog… There might be people in the CDC that have genuine concern for our wellbeing but I believe the top brass… the decision makers are bought and paid for by big Pharma.

I worked as an IT contractor inside CDC for a dozen years. The agency is probably 85/15 liberal to conservative and that may be on the low side.

The director is mostly a figurehead. Yes they can set priorities but the long term employees in the office of the director and the heads of the individual centers, institutes, and offices are the real power in the agency. They have final say over what gets published, who is nominated to/appointed to advisory committees, etc.

During the Obama years and first Trump term it wasn't horrible. Yes you knew there was a liberal slant and you kept conservative opinions to yourself, but it felt like the science and the verbiage was consistent with what everyone would consider normal.

Starting in 2021 you started to see more of an alignment with critical race theory and anti-racism. You started seeing employees using pronouns in email signatures and on Zoom calls. This is when "pregnant persons" and Black vs. white started showing up on websites and in publications.

Thanks for the insight. That's what it looked like from the outside.

There is no reason to believe the rank and file CDC epidemiologists and public heath investigators are incompetent or politicized.

That said, the CDC has been used as a political tool to provide legitimacy for decisions made by politicians. It allowed policy makers to use phrases such as "trust the science" to keep children out of schools when in fact there were virtually no data to justify the policy.

I'm not a healthcare professional.

My sister was diagnosed with MS when I was in college. The CDC prevented her from accessing any sort of treatment outside of pharmaceuticals. She went to a third world country, India, to actually treat her disease, in .. 2008? The treatment was a bit pricey but effective. Her MS hasn't progressed since then.

Every aspect about our country is profit-driven. There is more money to be made from treating symptoms than curing anything so we don't cure things in this country.

The only doctor I've trusted in the last 20 years is my OBGYN.

Anyone who believes the CDC is an impartial and incorruptible agency purely motivated by altruistic goals and the public good has never been involved first hand with the drug approval process and the "back and forth" that takes place with treatments that have questionable or marginal data associated with it.

Look at where the people who run the CDC have traditionally come from.

Look at where they go when they leave.

Look at the money that is donated by pharma to politicians.

Look at the money that is donated by pharma to the media.

CDC is rarely, if ever, involved with drug trials or approvals. That falls much more under the purview of the FDA. To be honest (regardless of what was shown in Contagion) I'm not really sure how much CDC is even involved in testing drug therapies on novel diseases.

They do set immunization schedules for children and adults as well as recommended certain immunizations, and that part can get politicized, but the drug has to have already been created and cleared (at least via EUA) by FDA.
