Just saw a sign in texas protest.

Who would draw the districts and what would they be based on. Seems like some stupid
Idea like that would hurt dems more than republicans nationwide

A computer algorithm could draw them using only location and population with no data as to party, race, income, etc.

There are websites with samples.

AI could do it in a millisecond. X number of seats with similar population #s as close to a grid as possible.

We will just trust the people designing the algorithm.

The Supremes have already ruled about Gerrymandering. It is a political process whereby the spoils go to the winner. I just think the republicans have been slow to fully appreciate the Gerrymandering they can do. They've been following the old political rules that the democrats abandoned a decade ago.

It's not a matter of "won't". It is a matter of "can't".

Populations shift, and we are a representative republic so the states must adjust the representation to the federal government accordingly.

That's called redistricting. Now if you are talking about the difference between redistricting and gerrymandering and outlawing gerry while keeping redistricting then yes, possibly but not likely. There's no clear cut line between the two. It's like justice Stewart and porn: you know it when you see it.

I postulate that the majority, vast majority, of gerrymandering is only possible if racial lines are used under 1964 civil rights. So if SCOTUS would rule that discrimination AND the GOP would get off its arse and bring those suits then most gerrymandering would disappear over 10 years without having to draw that line.

Publish it so it can be verified and the results recreated independently.

Yeah this isn't a complicated issue

And you wouldn't need AI to do it. You would just need census data and a fairly mundane program.

Drawing districts is one of those "you don't want to see how they make the hot dogs" aspects of politics. Lots of maneuvering and in-fighting. It's not just a red vs. blue scoring competition.

The incumbents want more job security so they don't have to constantly campaign for their jobs, even if that means relinquishing a seat to the other side.

Then there's money and influence. Re-drawing one guys lines may take his major financial contributors out of his district. It's still red but now there's more farmers and the wealthy magnates in the upper class suburbs were moved into a blue district. Yeah, they don't like it when you take money out of their pocket. Or they could lose their seat on the Armed Forces committee when you take the military base out of their district.

It's a lot more nuanced than the current debate is making it out to be. A computer could map out something neutral and logical but neither side want that.

Or, just keep in the hands of the voting population instead of an unelected bureaucracy.

Americans would.
I like the idea of candidates having to "campaign" to keep their job.
Do a good job and vote for constituents and not uniparty.

You could have AI do it based on population but I don't see how you outlaw gerrymandering.

No, it isn't.

quote:

The Supreme Court had ruled in Davis v. Bandemer (1986) that partisan gerrymandering violates the Equal Protection Clause and is a justiciable matter.

The Court again upheld that partisan gerrymandering could be justiciable in League of United Latin American Citizens v. Perry (2006).
