I know the cost of living in NYC is quite high but to think a person who works +30 years for the NYC fire department, retires in their 50's is making $171k/year in pension benefits is insane. No wonder a lot of these big Dim controlled cities are always whining for more federal dollars along with jacking up local taxes on real estate and retail sales......no wonder NYC is always in a budget crisis.

quote:

New York City firefighters and fire officers retiring last year after full careers were entitled to average annual pension benefits of $171,336, up 13 percent from the prior year, according to new data added to SeeThroughNY.net, the Empire Center’s government transparency website.

Among the 430 new retirees with at least 20 years of service, 108 were eligible for pensions over $200,000. Nearly 95% (405) of these full-career retirees were eligible for six-figure pensions.

Looking at the most recent data for all New York City Fire Pension Fund retirees – including those with fewer than 20 years in service, the average pension for all 15,958 FDNY retirees, as of fiscal year 2025, came to $98,921, up 51 percent from $65,364 a decade ago. Both amounts include in-service disability payments for some.

Overall, 784 retirees were eligible for pensions over $200,000, 34 percent more than the previous year’s total of 584. Out of these, 46 were eligible for pensions over $300,000, quadrupling since last year’s tally of 11.

As of July 2024, NYC has nearly $100 billion of debt on its books. When including unfunded liabilities the debt total soars to $300 billion.

quote:

Reason Foundation finds that New York City had over $300 billion in total liabilities at the end of 2022, more than four times Chicago’s $74 billion in liabilities and nearly six times Los Angeles’ $51.3 billion.

At the end of fiscal 2022, Houston and the District of Columbia also had over $20 billion in total liabilities.

Reason Foundation finds that New York City’s liabilities reached $34,567 per capita in 2022, the highest in the nation. The next highest per capita liabilities were in the District of Columbia ($29.4k per capita), Chicago ($26.9k per capita), and Atlanta ($21.2k per capita).

At $18,182 per capita, Yonkers, New York, surprisingly had the next highest liabilities, followed by Austin, Texas, with over $16,653 in liabilities per capita.

Sadly, I’ve heard enough stories about NYC to know that 3/4 of that is probably going to the eternal debt they’ve been paying $200/mo on and are now forced to pay 100% of.

Yeah, I don't think exorbitant is a descriptive enough word to describe a retired NYC fireman's annual pension of $171k/year.

It includes their disability kickers. How many of them are going to die young from cancer from working the world trade center site?

NYC should be focusing on not paying for migrants to live in hotels and for drug addicts to have safe zones. Fire fighters should be able to retire comfortably

All of these over inflated government pensions are going to take a haircut. No way around it, these aren't sustainable.

Oh by the way don't hold municipal bonds either. At some point mom and pop won't be able to even cover the interest much less return of principal. Politicians aren't getting less corrupt, greedy, wasteful either. The merry go round will stop all of a sudden and people will get hurt.

They retire to Florida where that kind of money buys a lot of fishing or golf.

A NYC fireman receiving $171k annual pension is so disconnected from the reality of street level Americans, who are paying taxes to provide that phat pension, it's ridiculous. Most Americans are fortunate to even have a pension and these people are paying taxes to provide a pension to a public worker/first responder that is twice the median household income.

Here's what's crazy, according to Google AI the annual salary of a NYC fireman is $60k with a top pay of around $100k......but if you work 30 years as a rank and file a fireman you get a pension of $100k. I'm guessing those getting a $171k/year are at 35-40 years service with some other career qualifications that put them into the upper pension bracket.......still $100k/year pension at 30 years is insane when the city is $100 billion in debt and $300 billion of unfunded liabilities.

Sorry your employer is shite?

I have a couple more years until I have my 85 points but as of today my pension estimate is 150k/year plus I get to keep my health insurance at the employee cost, the company with pay their part until my death. I also participate in the 401k but since I’m under the pension my company match is only 3%. As a bonus I live in BFE Texas not New York.

Instead of advocating for them to lose their good benefits, why not be pissed that you don't get the same benefits?

I'm doing fine. Count your blessings that you have what you have because the vast majority of Americans are lucky to have a pension and if they do have a pension they're fortunate if they get $20-30k annually.

As usual, you're missing the point, NYC is fricking nearly insolvent and they're paying out pensions to firefighters from $100k-$300k annually.

The point is you're blaming firefighter pensions for NYC's financial situation.
