This April, a team aboard NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer investigated the wreck of USS Yorktown (CV-5), an aircraft carrier that played a crucial role in the Battle of Midway. Their discoveries included the first full view of a mural of the ship’s travels, a Ford Super Deluxe "Woody" car, and the first airplanes ever seen at a wreck site connected to the Battle of Midway. Experience the history and the highlights in this video:

The exploration of USS Yorktown took place as part of NOAA Ocean Exploration's 2025 "Beyond the Blue: Papahanaumokuakea ROV and Mapping" expedition. You can learn more about the expedition and the team's discoveries on our website: LINK

The Yorktown you visited in September is the Essex Class CV10 USS Yorktown that was launched in 1943. It was named “Yorktown” to honor the Yorktown Class CV5 USS Yorktown that was sunk the year before at the battle of Midway.

ETA: CV5 USS Yorktown

CV10 USS Yorktown (during WWII)

I looked it up. The one in Charleston was named after the one in OP. They are distinguished by "cv-5" and "cv-10" proceeding their names, as they are different ship classifications.

I didn't know the navy renamed ships after each other, until today. I thought a ship's name was its name, until the end of time.

The one you saw was named in honor of this one. There have been 2 Yorktown aircraft carriers. This one was sunk in WWII CV5. CV10 is the one you see in SC.

Much better explanation from Darth,

2 different ships, this is straight from your link…

“The USS Yorktown (CV-10) was the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the United States Navy. Under construction as Bon Homme Richard, this new Essex-class carrier was renamed in honor of the USS Yorktown (CV-5) that was sunk at the epic Battle of Midway in June 1942.”

I grew up in Mt Pleasant. The one in OP served during World War II and was sunk in the Battle of Midway in 1942. The USS Yorktown in the Charleston harbor was built a year or two later and then decommissioned in the 70s.

The USS Yorktown was sunk during the Battle of Midway. The one that you visited obviously was named later & after the carrier was sunk.

It’s very common. For example, here is the USS Iowa everyone knows…

BB-61 USS Iowa

But here’s the first battleship named USS Iowa…

BB4 USS Iowa

(She was launched in the 1890s and fought in the Spanish-American War)

My neighbor was on the Yorktown when it went down. He survived the war and came back to Baton Rouge and worked at Esso/Exxon until he retired. His youngest son was on of my best friends growing up. We used to look at his nudie magazines. He down a Toyota, which I still think was odd.
