I heard about those JJ goal line trick plays and was wondering wtf we were doing. Reports were saying BK chewed out Sloan about this too. Apparently the second JJ came in, all 11 defensive players locked in on the run. Clemson will do the same. NO ONE is going to believe you’re taking Nuss out from under center and are going to throw with JJ.

What I wonder is why not in 4th & 1,2, or 3 we don’t run from a 3-4 wideout formation? I’m not a fan of bringing all the WR/TE to the line and trying to force it. B/c nuss is a non-factor, the defense gets an extra hat so it’s 11 vs 10. Put the receivers out wide, run a guy in motion to see if it’s man/zone, and then decide whether you want to run/throw.

I’m no X’s and O’s guy so maybe there’s a very good reason we don’t do this. thoughts?

You're going to have to get a little creative vs. Clemson in those situations.

Moscona was talking about this the other day, and I drew up a play in my mind in 20 seconds that involves Nussmeier hiking the ball but Johnson throwing a TD to Green in the back corner of the end zone. I've watched plenty of football but never really played. Im sure the offensive staff can come up with some plays to score with if it only took me 20 seconds.

the whole reason for running a qb on a direct or a rb on a direct snap alone in the backfield is because you get an extra blocker at the line of scrimmage.
we will do that with van Buren and have treydez run a corner route and sharp run a crosser. supposedly thats worked well already .
sometimes with nuss at qb and sometimes with Johnson or Buren at qb

treydez has gotten bigger and stronger ,hes going to be hell to deal with along with sharp in the redzone not to mention zavion Thomas has been used in motion to use his agility to run or get open.

we have plenty of weapons to not have to run it up the middle in all short yardage situations and we have guys that can catch at rb un those situations. you dont have to be able to run up the middle with a big back but Jackson may be the guy for that if we have to

During Tebow’s freshman season at UF, he played mostly in short yardage and goal-line situations. Everyone knew he was going to run it every play…until he threw a jump pass TD against us. The staff knows these practice reports are getting out there and how defenses will react if Johnson lines up at QB. I have a feeling they will try to use that to free up an easy pass play at some point.

Or maybe we never see the wildcat. Or they run it with MVB since he has experience as an SEC QB.

The defense always has an extra hat on the goalline. That’s why coaches like to leave a guy unblocked and read him. You could go spread out 5 WR and the defense would still have an extra fitter in the run bc there is no deep ball threat on the goalline so safeties are run fitters.

This is where the occasional formation with a fullback is useful.

Why use Van Buren at the goal line?

He isn't that great of a runner and has accuracy issues.

He had -12 rushing yards last year. He's okay but nothing super special. You'd be better to use Ju'Juan in that capacity, IMO.

Bauer Sharp has also been known to take some Wildcat snaps. He gives you a bigger, power type option.

He's listed at 6 foot, 190 lbs.

From his high school breakdown:

quote:

Good speed and can make yards with feet but best when standing in pocket and throwing.

quote:

Can pick up yards with feet but not a key part of his game

quote:

Has to add strength and mass throughout frame. Has some frame limitations in relation to size.

You aren't really gaining anything when subbing Nuss for Van Buren.

Nuss is more experienced, bigger, more accurate. Running abilities are probably pretty similar.

Creativity in the run game is important than just lining up and handing the ball off with 14 or 23 personnel (backs, tight ends).

JJ doing wildcat in the redzone is a creative way to try to create more misdirection and open up running lanes. You can have more options that way but what made Tim Tebow, or even Ryan Perrilloux so successful with it in 06 and 07 was that they had the threat of throwing the football. shite McFadden was dominant in the wildcat too for the same reason they let him throw the ball.

If we are going to run the wildcat with JJ then he is going to have to throw the ball but I highly doubt that is going to happen because you really don't want to take the ball out of Nuss' hands. I actually think a lot of this is just to get Clemson to prepare for something that is never going to happen lol. Otherwise the media would never see it.

You’re right.

What annoys me are these questions:

Do other SEC teams have to get creative at the goal line? Why can they have a good (not creative) run game and we cannot ?

instead of doing cutesy stuff like this they should be focusing on teaching their offensive lineman how to run block
