Looking at buying my son his first skinning knife. What do you guys use or recommend? Advice on Brands, fixed or folding knives welcomed. TIA

How much are you wanting to spend?
Is this something that you expect him to lose/abuse or is he pretty responsible with his stuff?

Is Outdoor Edge Razor an option? I prefer this to anything else I have used.

He'll lose and abuse it. Lol. He's 10.

I'd get him a cheap Buck, then. There are some Buck USA made options for under $30. I bought two Bucks for my nephews about 10 years ago and they're still using them.

Do those Buck's hold an edge well after sharpening?

Maybe a Morakniv with a carbon blade for $16.
This is a great suggestion. That said, he doesn’t need a “skinning knife”. Get him a decent pocket knife with a carbon steel blade he can sharpen.
No need for a special knife.

I skinned my first deer with a Buck 110 Folding Hunter. I skinned my last deer with that same Buck 110 40+ years later. Blade is a 'lil shorter tho, lol...

Good suggestions already in this thread.. have a couple of the Morakniv’s mentioned and can’t be beat for the money. I vaguely remember being 10, but there was always something cool about having a knife on a belt. A Buck 110 was the knife to have back in the day. I have my dad’s now that has been sharpened to a razors edge (not by me). It was sharpened last by the designated camp sharpener - he was “The Man”. I’ll pass it on to my son. No telling how many deer it skinned in it’s day.
Get him a cool belt knife and get you the Outdoor Ege mentioned. It’s without a doubt the one to use when you want to get the skinning done quickly. My son worked for a processor and would skin all day and he used the Outdoor Edge.
One of the coolest “why didn’t I think of that” moments was looking at their skinning rack. They used an electric hoist and an anchored eye bolt of course..but on one of the support columns they had one of the $2 Harbor Freight magnetic tool holders that he would stick his knives to while he was skinning. I just thought that was brilliant.
I’d say get him a Buck 110 or one of the fixed blade Bucks - both still USA made evidently, and still under $100.
You are a good dad and raising him right!

I say get him an older collectible. My dad gave me a Edge Mark antler handle knife when I was not much older than your son and I still have it. I actually love the thing and cant bring myself to get anything different. Its comfortable, holds an edge, and can be as sharp or as dull as YOU want to make it for him. Its not so small that he'll lost it like a folding knife and most come with a cool leather sheath. It's a piece he will WANT to use and keep forever.
Mine is similar to this.

We stacked up a bunch of deer in Texas a couple years ago and I became a believer in these things. They out performed all other knives we had including Benchmades and even a Randall..

I love those replaceable razor ones, but my son would absolutely cut a finger off with one in no time.

Morakniv with a carbon blade for $16. I keep a few of these around
These are great knives for the price. I bought several on Amazon for ~$12/ea several years ago.

Thanks. I like that Buck 110 and find him a good leather vertical belt sheath
Ive a havalon replaceable blade knife. Dont trust him with surgical blades.

I have the stainless and the carbon Morakniv. If anyone is considering one the carbon seems sharper.

I use a victorinox 6” boning knife and really like it. Very affordable and easy to sharpen.
