I guess what time frame is it most analogous too in terms of skill and technology in world history? And if there’s a clear answer there did humanity have the skill for painting? Robert references not remember what Lyanna looked like. And thinking on it, I don’t remember a painting of any kind appearing in the series.

I find actual world history’s development of really accurate levels of portrait and painting to be surprisingly recent. I’m pretty sure perspective was only developed in the last 500 years or so right? Somehow that seems so recent given that I’m pretty sure the literal tools and technology to do so had existed for a while (ie, paintbrushes, paint, paper, etc…)

If they did have paintings then they would have been very crude.

Weren't there pornographic paintings on the walls of the red keep in HotD?

I’ve never seen it and won’t watch it. Game of thrones to me these days is seasons 1-6 and the rest jettisoned from my brain.

Relative to what? I find that fascinating given what other technological advancements there were that seem more difficult than effectively arranging color on a page.

I thought about this a while back but not in terms of game of thrones specifically.

Why are cave drawings so basic? Were we just dumb? a grown arse adult couldn’t draw better than a one dimensional rudimentary buffalo?

Were grown adults back then as limited as toddlers are now? Bc they drew the same.

No other excuse bc you could use your eyes and then apply to a drawing?

Game of Thrones is supposed to be Medieval times, this is a painting from that time period:

Yeah I just find it somewhat hilarious how crude our paintings were for so long.

Maybe in Essos. Westeros seemed very very backwards in arts compared to the people across the narrow sea.

Depends on what you consider really accurate. There were some amazing portraits done during the Roman Empire but after the fall Christians basically cut that off because you should not bother to paint humans. The middle ages saw portraits come back to the point of easily being able to recognize specific people. The Renaissance was a big turning point (though that is over a long time), and the Dutch Masters took it to the next level and arguably the pinnacle of portraiture. Today you have some amazing portraits from the photorealism school but that has only been around for ~50 years.

HotD is surprisingly good. Matt Smith & Paddy Considine give awesome performances.

There's a giant map in the courtyard in the Red Keep would have to be a painting.

I'd make the argument that it wasn't intellectual or manual ability so much as a lack of precedent.

If you grew up in a society with language but no writing you would never come up with the idea of phonics and letters. And yet we can teach the application of those concepts to very young children.

If you are the first in your group to start drawing on a cave wall there are zero technological or artistic references upon which you adjust and improve. You have no color palate. You have to invent the idea of instruments for painting. There's rarely a naturally occurring flat surface on which to draw. The concept of light and shadows are wrapped in mythology rather than understanding.

Odds are tremendously good only one in hundreds would be creative and applied enough to make the shitty little mud spot that was a first recognizable attempt at wall art.

And it’s considered a great feat to do it. I’m curious how they couldn’t translate that artistry to portraits.
