Gents needs some help.
Last summer I mentioned to my brother who drove in for our dad's funeral from Canada has needs to check on changing his timing belt if he hasn't.
He came down again this year and had some trouble on the road with a battery clamp. So while chatting about it i asked him again about the belt and what they charged him to change it and the subsequent parts like tensioner and water pump....
He tells me his shop up there told him he has a chain.
It's a 2012 v6 and has 172k miles on it. Im waiting for him to send me the VIN so I can read up because I can't find anything where they would have had a chain on that model. It was purchased in Canada. Can't find where it would be different there...
Does anyone here know any different on regards to some models with chains?
How concerned would you guys be about driving back across the country on this belt? I feel like he's lucky he's made it this far. It'd be bad news to have that kind of failure on the road....

I changed the timing belt on my daughter's Honda Accord V6 at 120K miles. I opened up everything and and it all looked brand new. Zero signs of wear and tear. Not even any micro cracks. The only thing I can say, maybe, was that the old belt seemed to be very, VERY slightly stretched out (maybe) compared to the new one.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes. I have one but in 2022. This is what I'm concerned over.

Does my Honda Odyssey have a timing belt or chain?
The Honda Odyssey has a timing belt rather than a timing chain. You can usually learn whether your Honda has a timing belt or chain based on the model year and the kind of engine you have. The answer for your Odyssey happens to be easy! All Honda Odyssey models are built with timing belts in the engine, so you don’t need to worry that you’ve got them mixed up. Because your minivan has a timing belt instead of a chain, there are a few things that you’ll need to keep in mind about your Odyssey’s upkeep, like when you should replace your timing belt.

Everything I'm seeing is a timing belt setup for yours. Should not have chain. To be 100 percent you'd need to give the VIN to a shop to make sure, but if I was a betting man your gonna have a belt.
If you bring it to a shop, make sure water pump, belt, guides, tensioner, seals, etc get changed. Most shops know to do this and purchase kits that come with parts I just listed. $1400 - $1500 price would be my guess.
If it snaps ouch.... What sucks is you don't know what it looks like till you take the front cover off. I've seen them look brand new at 175K. Seen them about to come apart at 100K.

Almost certain its going to have a belt. On some engines you can open up a timing belt cover just enough to peer inside and get an idea of the condition of a belt. If you see cracks, worry. Needs to be changed regardless but may be fine until they get home.

My Wife has 2021 Pilot. Richards Honda in BR just quoted me $1300 to change the timing belt. It only has 80K miles I’m not going to do it until it gets 100-120K.

Rock Auto, AutoZone, Oreilly's all have timing belts, none has a timing chain for that model Odyssey with a V6. Not definitive but chances or if any model had a chain and not a belt they'd list one for sale for the model and engine.
Changing a timing belt before it comes apart is a lot or work but its cheaper than if it comes apart while driving or idling. Chains can also fail but they ain't as likely to do so.

Talked to my brother yesterday and he's going to find a shop here in town to take care of it before they get going again. I reminded him about the extras he's going to want to change.
I did .you wife's accord when we were dating. It wasn't fun but saved a lot of money.
Thanks.

All J-Series Honda V6 motors use timing belts. All of them.
