Fishing Bayou St. John?

I am going to take my son fishing on Bayou St. John tomorrow. I am an inexperienced fisherman. As best I can tell, we should try to catch redfish and bass there, and closer to the lake is better for redfish. Would dead shrimp under a cork work? Are there other baits that I should instead be focusing on? We do have kayaks so I won't be limited to bank fishing. Any advice on how to catch at least one fish of any variety would be greatly appreciated.

Following because I never really considered fishing there when I am in town, but I definitely will next time.
You'll catch something with a dead shrimp under a cork, but probably stuff you don't want to catch mostly. I'd probably throw a scented plastic shrimp under a popping cork if you don't want to mess with live shrimp. It'll probably work just as good, and you won't have to deal with re-bating your hook all day.

The shrimp under the cork will work.

Lots of times all you wind up catching is either a good suntan or bad sunburn depending on how long you stay out in the sun and if using sunscreen or not.
It's been years since I fished the Lake Pontchartrain area but have caught croakers, gafftop catfish, drum, sheepshead, trout and the occasional redfish.
The farther inland from the lake you can possibly run into perch and bass.
It's gonna be hot out there tomorrow, so be prepared and good luck.

There is an easy launch spot directly across from the second, maybe third gate to the agricultural department site. Gate with stop sign on it.
Hit the docks around park island up and down for bass.
Paddle down past the park and have lunch at Parkway or Blue Oak. Assuming you a get under all the bridges and bring something to lock up the kayaks.

If yall are in that area and looking for something close just head to the city park lakes. They are well stocked with bass and you can find some no matter what you’re throwing, but default is to Texas rig a watermelon or green pumpkin senko and you’ll get a bite eventually throwing it up around grass and tree limbs. Bayou St John is tough sledding, and quite literally a gar hole most of the year.

Market shrimp on a treble hook on bottom or under cork.
I’ll echo the park, too.

Lots of bream and rios. A few bass. Some really big gars. Specks almost nonexistent inside landlocked part.

Unfortunately, no. Sadly, I'm just not much of a fisherman. My son has had some good luck lately with his friends though (real fisherman), so all is well.

The only time I fish City Park is when I want some bream for live bait when I go catfishing the next day. Small pieces of worms on suitable hooks under a small cork and it's game on.
I usually stop around 15 and keep them in a 5 gallon bucket filled with water from the lagoon and put an aerator in the bucket to keep them alive.
I've caught some very nice cats-----flatheads, channel and blues using live bait in the Mississippi River. My best day size wise was just 4 cats that totaled just over 80 lbs.

Go down Bayou St John close to the lock that opens from the lake.
That’s the only place we’ve ever had any luck. They open that thing from time to time a little, but there is no schedule.
And yes, bream are in city park.

I was driving along the BSJ a few weeks ago, an old man was walking his little dog at the waters edge. I rolled down my window to warn him about the gators that lurk there. He told me he has been doing this for years and he's not worried.
