I've never been to Fort Polk, but I've heard the boom booms while turkey hunting with my uncle near Gardner.

Would a one star general assigned to command the base consider it a career step in the right direction?

That's the armpit of Louisiana. Second only to Angola, which is the swamp arse of the state.

Best meal I ever had was at fort Polk. Don’t know what it was. But after being rained on for three days and digging mortar holes in that F’ing clay, we got a hot meal at night, couldn’t see wtf I was eating, but it was damn good and warm

Heck - I remember when it was Camp Polk - and how proud when it got designated a "Fort"

No way in hell I'd ever have referred to it as ft johnson,

Ft. Polk is back to being Ft. Polk.

It was originally named after Leonidas Polk, (April 10, 1806 – June 14, 1864) a Confederate general, a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and founder of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States of America.

LINK

Now it's named after James Hilliard Polk (13 December 1911 – 18 February 1992) a United States Army four-star general who served as Commander in Chief, United States Army Europe from 1967 to 1971. He was one of the last senior commanders in the army to have served in the horse cavalry.

quote:

On 10 June 2025, it was announced that the base name would be reverted back to Fort Polk and renamed in honor of Gen. James H. Polk, who received the Silver Star for his service in World War II.

Fort Johnson will return to Fort Polk, but honor another Polk

Should have never been named that in the first place. The Bishop, Leonidas Polk was Nathaniel Banks bad.

Cool, more wasted tax dollars changing all the signs that already wasted tax dollars to replace the name in the first place.

I lived there as a kid.

Good fishing.

fricking hated the cannons on the 4th of July at Alligator Lake though.

No clue how it is today, that was back in the 70s.

Small price and also it seems many locals still referred to it as Ft. Polk and the local government was able to save money now by not having to paint over a mural that still stated Ft. Polk. Now Ft. Bliss and Bragg need to go back to what they were too.

I spent a lot of time at 29 Palms when I was in the Marines. That place was fricking miserable. The old rumor was that the only reason that it was a Marine Corps base was because the army deemed it too miserable and uninhabitable for human life so they gave the land to the Marines for free.

Then I got out and joined the national guard and the first thing the guard did was send me to JRTC at Polk. I really missed 29 Palms.
