How’s Memphis/Beale street these days?

My parents are on vacation in Arkansas 2 hours west of Memphis in some rural cabin on a river. Very fun. They plan to spent a day or two in Memphis before flying back and want to stay at the Peabody and see Beale street.
They have ZERO street sense. They’re from a very safe and well heeled DC suburb and have zero concept of urban danger.
When they’d visit my wife and I when we lived in NOLA I witnessed all of this first hand. They’d just walk through horrific neighborhoods without even thinking about it and even jumped in a random car that wasn’t their uber (thank Christ it was actually an off the clock uber driver who they just paid in cash).
They’re just past 60 and have never lived in areas with actual violence. Obviously im a little uptight but I also worry about them because they have no mental awareness that there are people who will rob them without a seconds notice and they have a lot to rob. Dad always carries fat wads of cash and what not and they’re just very obviously well off tourists.
Not gonna lie I am stressed about them walking around Memphis on their own.

Won’t be a problem at the times your 60 year old parents are doing the tourist routine.
Assuming your dad isn’t walking around with his cash fanned out, but that’ll get you in trouble anywhere.

I was there visiting for first time 5 years ago. I wouldn’t do it again. Just didn’t see appeal. I didn’t feel unsafe per se but just not my crowd.

Stay at the Westin on Beale St.

So, if something happened to them, you stand to gain from those ‘well heeled’ parents with ‘fat wads’ of cash?
And you are taken them to urban areas where they get into random cars?
Hmmm …. If I didn’t know better, I’d connect some dots here.

This being said - they should avoid Memphis. It’s a shithole.

I live here and I just took some guests from out of town to Beale St. on a Sunday afternoon no issues.
I would advise your parents not to walk anywhere downtown after dark especially on the weekends. Otherwise should be fine.

Voodoo BBQ is trash.
Are they Elvis fans? The museum was pretty cool.

Remember, they’re from suburban DC. So we all have a vested interest in keeping them alive.

The Beale street and area immediately local to it is not bad. They know they have to keep their famous tourist attractions safe. Outside of that, for an older couple, I’d put the kabash on walking around anywhere else after sundown.
If they want to sample the BBq.. send them to Memphis BBQ company in Horn Lake, MS or The Commissary in Germantown.

Sounds like your parents are enjoying life more than you are due to a more realistic expectation of personal danger moment to moment.

The Westin is nice for the area- but in terms of the Westin brand- it’s a bottom barrel property. With it being a stone’s throw from Beale street- I don’t suggest his elderly parents staying there or anywhere in Memphis really.
And for the love of all that is holy a they do NOT need to go visit Graceland.

No they are legitimately completely oblivious. I’m glad they’re enjoying retirement but I lived in these areas and know what goes down when you aren’t being smart. Again, I know the odds ultimately are still low but they’re my parents and I think any of us would be concerned about them walking around say, New Orleans, without having any idea what they were doing.

If they are wanting a quaint little southern area- they should go to the square in Collierville.

no it all goes to the DNC 2028 fund if they die.

As long as they're alive, they'll continue to vote (D), and the DNC is going to get the money eventually anyway.
So, Memphis is perfectly safe at night.

And why is this?

Graceland is in the heart of the hood. Bars on all the windows of ‘businesses’ and gang related crime abounds.
It’s a total trash area and not worth seeing something you can watch a documentary about from the safety of literally anywhere else.

How is this possible living in the DC area?
