The surge has helped businesses in areas popular with foreigners and landlords or those renting rooms on long-term stays on platforms like Airbnb. But it has also threatened to make large swaths of the city, where the average monthly salary is about $370, unaffordable to many locals.

Some protesters had likened the influx of Americans and Europeans to a modern form of colonialism, with Frente Anti Gentrificación Mx, one of the grass roots groups that organized the demonstration, calling on people to protest against “American imperialism” in a post on social media.
The group said on social media before the demonstration that gentrification amounted to “a silent expulsion.”

The demonstration in Mexico City is part of a broader movement against mass tourism that has cropped up in increasingly unaffordable cities around the world, including a recent wave of protests in Italy, Portugal and Spain.

I agree with the Mexicans. US is for Americans, Mexico is for Mexicans

They can come claim their ten million kin here anytime. Americans can also vacation places where people don’t turn their nose at the cash

Are really that many Americans going to Mexico City on vacation? I get Italy, Portugal and Spain, even Cozumel, but Mexico City?

Sounds like they are more upset with expats looking to retire there because it’s so cheap. Brits did this in East Asia

You have never been to Mexico City.

Not only short term rentals, lots of Americans live in Mexico.

I never go there. It's a shithole country. If they want to tear up their own cities, have at it.

Closer and cheaper. American tourism is big business. Some of their citizens want Americans out, but I'll bet their leaders wish they would just STFU.

They're not protesting "tourists" per se, more so the digital nomads who have been living there. Also, Mexico City is a great vacation spot. You should go.

True but this isn't apples to apples. We don't have millionaires coming across the border wanting to inject cash into our economy. We have illegals wanting to western union money out of this country.

We will expatriate10,000 Latinos for each American.
That seems fair and equal.

Lots of blonde hair blue eyed women in Mexico City. They've been there since at least the early 1800s
