Jon Jones, widely considered the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, has retired from competition, UFC CEO Dana White announced on Saturday.

According to White, Jones, 37, informed the promotion of his decision to retire on Friday. The UFC had been working toward booking a heavyweight title unification bout between Jones and interim champion Tom Aspinall, but with Jones's sudden retirement, Aspinall is now elevated to undisputed champion.

quote:

Jones (28-1) moved up from the light heavyweight division to capture the vacant heavyweight championship over Ciryl Gane in 2023. He defended the belt once during his 27-month title reign, in a third-round TKO victory over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November.

A bout between Jones and Aspinall would have been one of the biggest in UFC heavyweight history, but Jones repeatedly downplayed the potential matchup, arguing that a win over Aspinall would have done nothing for his legacy. Jones' disinterest caused many observers to accuse him of ducking Aspinall. An online petition calling for Jones to be stripped of his title garnered nearly 200,000 signatures.

Is he ducking?

It's not like he has anything to prove at this point.

He really doesn't, he's on the Mt. Rushmore of UFC and doing the right thing hanging it up if he doesn't think he can win.

I get his perspective, but he’s duckin’ for sure.

I don’t blame him though. After a while nobody will remember him ducking, if he stays retired. People would remember if he lost. It’s not worth the risk to his legacy to fight.

He’s ducking, but it doesn’t matter. He’s still the GOAT.

Aspinal's final quip to Jones for ducking him:

"I retired you without even having to fight you..."

Pretty cold. Good riddance. Jones held up the division for 2 yrs.

Now get Tom vs Vookov for the title in November at MSG, then Poatan vs Tom in April.

Bring back Francis after that and winner fights him at MSG in November 2026.

There, I just made the UFC HW division awesome again.

He has nothing left to prove. The only reason anyone is saying he is “ducking” Aspinall is because he didn’t retire immediately after Stipe. There is always another challenger.

He said earlier this week he has no itch to fight and doesn’t want to go through another camp if he’s not fully in it. He’s earned the right to retire on his own terms, he doesn’t owe anything.

Congratulations to Aspinall, the new HW champ!

Wish we could’ve seen Jones vs Ngannou

After multiple suspensions for PEDs, he could prove that he can win a big fight clean. Drug testing is getting better all the time….seems to me like he can’t mask it this time.

So who will Aspinall fight?. Dream fight would be him vs. Francis but Francis isn’t coming back to UFC for a while.

You either retire the GOAT or fight long enough to become the next Silva.

Then he shouldn’t have held up the division for 2 years. He may be the GOAT when he’s in the octagon, but between the legal troubles, doping, and the bullshite he pulled the last couple of years, he deserves any shite he gets and I can’t believe Dana put up with it as long as he did
