When this was floated months ago this board was avidly against it, and I understand why.
But this always seemed likely, and on paper, is sensible if it works at all. I don't have a strong position, but
A) Since the administration is facing massive court/institutional opposition; AND
B) now that Trump seems to have made big strides at the border and elsewhere...
I think people who thought this would encourage more illegal immigration or were otherwise opposed should at least take another look at it.

This would be way cheaper than a lifetime of welfare and medical care and dealing with their anchor babies in perpetuity.

I think it's the only reasonablel solution.
With 20+ million here illegally we'll never be able to round them all up and deport espically if it cost $17k a head. Put fear in them they could be arrested at any time and deported on a moments notice and the alternative of a little planning and expenses paid to leave may entice many to go voluntarily.

There is no need to do this.
Announce a 60 day or 90 day self deportation window. If you leave in that time frame you are allowed to take your assets and wealth with you. After the time frame is up all assets/wealth are seized by US Government and you leave with nothing.

Smart. Spend minimal amount of money, use the saving to beef up the border so that they can't easily come back over.

I like this but would add some additional incentives and penalties for non compliance.
If they leave give them a travel stipend as he allowed.
If they don’t leave I would make them permanently unable to ever reapply for legal status and would pursue whatever additional charges possible from a punitive standpoint if they are apprehended after the window closes.

it is also much more humane as opposed to taking people and throwing them in a prison for the rest of their lives in another country.
If people do this, it would be loads cheaper and could be much more effective rather than slamming our court systems.
