Why do people only dress nice in materialistic places

I live in Texas. Most people here don’t dress nice anymore. My grandfather and great grandfather were ranchers all their life and nonetheless dress in a nice manner.
Nowadays everybody dresses for comfort and the only semi nice clothing you see exists in places with abundant materialism. The rich areas where everybody is trying to out compete each other.
Don’t get me started on Dallas.
Are there places that people dress nice and aren’t so materialistic? The Carolinas? Virginia? Georgia? I get the sense they might have the same materialistic problem, and in fact it is why it exists here in Texas too.
But maybe it’s worse here?

Serious question…
What do you consider nice clothes?

What do you mean by "materialistic"?
You complain that people don't dress "nice" (whatever that means) and when they do, they are materialistic.

Collared shirt and pants, non running shoes sometimes, pretty lenient, as it is very hot down here.

I can afford brooks brothers, which isn’t that expensive.
I don’t want to live with a bunch of materialistic people though. It is a Scrooge on society.

I wear English tweed when traversing the Bob Marshall Wilderness. I can’t imagine the shame I would feel if a bear or moose saw me in casual hiking gear.

They are Uber focused on competing with each other. Keeping up with the jones. They are more focused on this than perhaps anything else. It bleeds into their kids and damages the community.
Madison, MS, Alamo heights, TX, highland park, doesn’t matter where, it exists in perhaps every rich southern community, but I would suspect some are not as bad as others.

I'm jeans and a t-shirt 90% of the time. It's hot in Louisiana.
In the winter, I tend to dress nicer.

Bro, if you live in the Dallas area, you are basically in one of the epicenters of materialism in the U.S..
