A Virgin Atlantic flight had almost reached North America before it turned back to the UK in an eight-hour ordeal for passengers.
Flight 3 was heading from London Heathrow Airport to New York's JFK Airport on Thursday.
Nearly four hours after departing, it was about 330 miles off the Canadian coast when it U-turned over the Atlantic, according to data from Flightradar24. It then squawked 7700, an emergency signal.

The Airbus A350 landed in Manchester, in northern England, about eight hours after taking off from London.
A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said in a statement that the flight returned "as a precautionary measure," citing a "technical issue."
Images shared on social media showed the A350 landing at Manchester with its landing-gear doors open — a sign of a problem with the plane's hydraulics.

Still doesn’t explain turning around

Why would you not land in NYC versus going back to London ?

Why wouldn't it just land in Canada?

Pilot got a booty call let’s be honest.

Possible emergency, so let’s turn around and fly four hours back across the ocean instead of an hour plus to reach land on this side? That doesn’t make any sense.

If it had crashed, would the payout per dead passenger have been less in the UK than in New York?

I would be fricking pissed if i was a passenger

Taking a guess they called their airline / messaged them, and were told the likely repair would be far cheaper if they turned around and did it in the UK.

^This is the answer. There's only a handful of home base airports where airlines have the maintenance infrastructure to fix larger issues.

Fair enough, but I can almost certainly guarantee that airlines have agreements with other airlines that partner up with each other to limit the costs

I would be so hammered by the end of that flight.

They needed to land at one of the airlines hubs, because that's where their mechanics are licensed to work. The pilots requested Heathrow Airport but were denied.

Probably. "Should we land and let all the nice paying passengers off first". "No, they will still fly with us regardless."

This doesn’t even get to how pissed I would be. I’m pissed reading it and I’m sitting at home

Just land in Montreal and be done with it.
ETA:POTUS 2024 explained the issue. Makes sense.
