How much would you spend on your pet before you draw the line?

My 1 year old lab has a sock addiction, no matter what I do she sneaks socks from my 2 and 4 year old. Like a dumbass, I didn’t get pet insurance the first time I saw her crap one out. She’s eaten so many damn socks I can’t put a number on it. I’ve only caught her once, every time I’m in the house I scour for socks and it’s clean, but somehow she’s continued to pass them out in the yard.
Well it caught up today, i came down this morning and she was laying in puke and 4 socks in her crate. I took her to the Vet ER as she was puking and wouldn’t eat or drink all day, my worst fear came to pass. X rays showed potentially 3 more socks lodged in her intestines and the Vet urged for surgery cause as we were there her puke turned green and Vet said she wouldn’t make it through tomorrow. I said how much, thinking maybe 2-3k…..
fricking estimate was low end $7500 and high end $11000!! I bought her for $1200. After initial conversations with my wife and lots of tears I told the Vet I couldn’t afford that. I gotta buy a new vehicle, I’ve got kids, I’ve got a mortgage, I couldn’t believe how cold I sounded out loud but it would be financially irresponsible for me to pay that. I went back in pissed off and said why should I have to put my dog down because I can’t afford this? She’s only 1 year old! It ain’t like it’s terminal brain cancer, it’s surgery to remove socks and she’s gonna die! You have to help me out here
So of course, they started “looking at some things” and got it down to $4000. I wanted to strangle the damn Vet tech for robbery. Then my MIL who loves our dog maybe more than we do said she’d pay for half. I pushed back but she wouldn’t take no. So with my nuts clipped off taking a handout from my MIL, I said yes and she’s going into surgery tonight.
Did I make the right call? I wasn’t going to pay 7500 potentially 11000, that’s just financially stupid. But I can stomach 2000 since she’s only 1 and has hopefully another decade in front of her.
We’re making some huge changes to make sure it doesn’t happen again, we got pet insurance now for starters, she’ll wear a loose muzzle in the house when she’s not eating. I hate it for her, but it’s for her own good.
And for anyone who says just don’t let her eat socks, it ain’t that easy with two kids under 4.
I’m sitting here drinking beer trying to unwind over what just went down, I was very close to saying goodbye to my sweet 1 year old Lab a couple hours ago. But doors were opened and hopefully everything goes ok.
What’s the OTs line on price you’d pay for your dog to live?

We got three goldens and they are like our children but if the outcome is bleak just know there ain't no hole deep enough. I would set the limit for each at about 5 k. Hell my wife got a price she just don't know it

We don't deserve dogs. You made right decision to have the surgery. Remove socks. Period. If you can get her to 4/5 yrs old she will stop those bad habits. Get her spayed if you haven't already.

On a 1 year old lab that appears to be dumb as hell? I would have pulled the plug.
Now my lab that I never had to potty train and never chewed anything up from 8 weeks old that lived to be 16, whatever it took.

My dogs are worth more to me than most humans I know. I’ll pay whatever it takes because they make me happy.

My dog swallowing my socks is not a form of happiness, that’s just my opinion though.

I can’t say for every situation but that’s about right for yours especially if a positive prognosis is likely. I might hesitate somewhat because of the sock thing though. Hopefully she learns a lesson but I bet she won’t. Maybe grows out of it. That’s a pretty miserable condition to have to worry about with a dog. Who’s to say she won’t move to something else either?And when can the point come where you won’t have to be so guarded about it? I think you did right though.

I see what you’re saying but she’s very smart other than this. Shes got all her commands down pat, she was potty trained and wanting to go outside within two weeks of having her, she knows to go to her crate without me telling her while the kids eat, she sits and waits for me to give her the command to eat, she retrieves, she gets on her bed with the snap of my finger, she gently wrestles with my kids and lets my 2 year old crawl all over her, she heels on walks, she’s incredibly sweet and obedient. It’s not an IQ issue, she doesn’t know a sock can block her intestines.
That’s her only vice, many labs and other breeds eat things they shouldn’t.

It is hard to have a set price. I think it is what you can afford. I took my dog to the ER last week. We think she got into a saga palm tree and had a reaction....costs of everything was about $3,000 for the bloodwork, testing, IVs, etc. I didn't hesitate paying it, but at 37, and upper middle class, I could do that. At age 27, eating Ramen noodles and bumming internet off my neighbor, the call would have been much harder to make on what is the magic number. Today I would have done $10,000....ten years ago, I honestly don't know.

That was my huge hesitation too. She’ll do this again. Our only actions going forward have to be no socks on the main level where she’s allowed. She’s not allowed upstairs where we all sleep and knows it. No more socks on main level and a soft muzzle when she’s inside plus insurance going forward. That’s all I can do. If she does it again and needs surgery where even with insurance it’s over $1000 I told my wife I’m gonna have to put her down. It sucks but family finances come first, this is her only chance and I’ll do whatever we can to help her cause she’s a great dog and we love her. Like another poster said, I think as she ages it’ll go away.

We had a shite ton of rattlesnakes in our subdivision this past year, new construction and creeping over from the surrounding fields I guess. Had 3 in the yards of our neighbors. I picked up pet insurance for my German shepherd assuming if she were bit I wouldn’t care to pay $5K in medical bills but I’ll let them for sure.

Our golden used to have a sock addiction but he grew out of it as he got older. He used to hold ever sock he could get in his mouth and if you tried to take it he’d start swallowing as fast as he could. Ended up at the vet a couple times because of it
That’s a beautiful pup I’d pay it. You just have to do what we did and have a hard rule about leaving socks lying around
